All athletes should have a decent strength foundation, so avoiding things like squats and deadlifts is just plain silly. I don't think I'll ever see how any fighter could be better by having a weak foundation

The deadlift improves functional strength. When you're in a clinch against a bigger guy, those deadlifts are going to pay dividends and stop you getting bullied around the ring like a bitch.
You are trying to sell good info to a kid thats not interested which is why i see other threads he made and wont bother with them...... as a weight trained person for 25 years the dead lift or squat will improve overall performance as will weight training itself when training properly ,i do lift heavy but make sure my strikes dont lose form or speed by simply shocking the muscles either dioing bag work first or weights first so my muscles are used to the xtra fatigue when punching ,everyone has to find a routine best for them ....another misconception is weights will slow you down ,that is false lean muscle is much more explosive than fat or no muscle at all.Look at guys like Wilder ,Haye and Klitchko fast ,hard exellent punchers due to lean muscles and all are over 220 ,as just a few examples.....Tyson the best example of a lean fast 220 pounder everyone was amazed at he was able to be that fast because he trained to punch like a light weight with speed drills and his muscular body is what enabled him to do so ,most muscular guys are slow because they dont train incorrectly.

Win or lose having the strength advantage is an immediate advantage causing your opposition to work harder to beat you regardless in almost any sport ,combat sports in particular ,the stronger personan USUALLY can dictate pace and force the opponent to fight his fight .While strength may be more important in MMA than boxing the same principles apply.

..."most muscular guys are slow because they dont train incorrectly"....huh?

If your a young fellow starting out in boxing weights are a waste of time. Do exercise that including "moving your body weight" chins, sit ups, running, swimming etc.......weight are for building muscle and a young man that trains as a boxer will gain what he needs by hard work, eating correctly and sleeping properly.
Theres so much to learn in the Methods & Techniques in boxing you need to be paying attention to your trainer and the gym surroundings.
Weights are far down on a boxers list especially a young fellow just beginning.

I didn't disclaim it I said it would be least important and down on a list of importance to a young beginner!'It's time for you to read posts and stop being offensive to everyone elses comments. You are a self taught internet geek thats fine by me. If you think your knowledge superceeds someone who was a professional trainer thats fine but lets face it your a troll just looking for BS!

funny you are the sole one other than billea who likes to attack others opinions, the other good thing about the net is anyone could back track to the comments and see who is giving out FALSE info about this topic.when you say weights are only good for bodybuilding.which was the quoute directed at me,when I said nothing about a young man lifting weights? Everyone on here is talking about is if weight training going to improve performance...your post clearly doesn't support that it does ,which as usual can as your many of your posts can be easily disproved........ you haven't touched a weight in your life ,im a trained athlete for over 2 decades and lifed weights over 2 decades about 25 years yet you are going to tell me how it works?

And just how the **** is Ray Corso involved in a conversation regarding any form of S&C?

Ray you are a dinosaur.. Your opinion is utterly worthless here.

If I want to learn something about "methods" or "techniques" or something like that, then I'd understand your input, but you've nothing valuable to add here at all because even though the rest of us here have a difference of opinion, we understand there's this thing called "sports-science" which helps guide fact from fiction.

MY opinion is there are some negative connotations of weights and some obviously positive as well, which can and have been addressed over the years, and guess what.. They're still here aren't they?

The mere fact alone that MOST top amateur and professional boxers utilise some form of weight training is TOTAL proof that you have no idea what your talking about.

Get back to the retirement village Ray.. You have your boules trophies to mull over now old man.

                    Elroy lol
