I love it when a kid joins boxing and he tells me that he is/was a wrestler. Their minds have already been taught to work hard, plus they are generally already in good shape.
Wrestling is the only sport that I ever thought compared to being a boxer in terms of the conditioning needed to compete. Both are big time endurance............ Rockin'
I personally have found that doing Shotokan Karate for a number of years has helped me with boxing, both technically and in mindset. Don't know whether this applies to other martial arts like Muay thai, Kung Fu, etc. ?
Also, not exactly "sports" but thought it qualified anyway.
A lot of people say basketball because basketball involves a lot of footwork, balance, speed, quickness, fakes and other similar movements.
But I played basketball my whole life as a point guard and shooting guard and I feel nothing I ever did in basketball helps me in boxing.
My speed and quickness help a lot in boxing and maybe my years in basketball is what helped me develop that speed. Its hard to say really.
imo sports that will really help you with boxing are sports that will prepare you for the mental part. Tough sports like wrestling, football or even rugby. But still, these sports are a distance away from jumping in a ring or cage with another man and trying to hurt each other.
So as far as mechanics, basketball, maybe tennis for its lateral movement and sports like this can help your boxing skill set.
Mentally, sports like wrestling and football will be as close as you get.

Wrestling definitely has a lot of overlap in terms of the rigor of conditioning and weight control.
Football - I've played football. It's totally different. Even the conditioning for football can't really compare. A lot of football players are too muscular. Football training might do more harm than good.
There really aren't too many other sports that help with boxing aside from establishing some baseline conditioning for which Wrestling is closest.
I'd actually say dancing and maybe gymnastics might be the most beneficial due to the high level of coordination required along with some explosiveness.

Guys trained in other martial arts like karate and kung fu have to unlearn a lot of things to box. The defense, guard, stance and striking techniques are very different.

I dont think thats a fair statement because most people fold in the ring and dont stick around very long lol.
But as far as football players, linemen are who I find to have it mentally and even physically. They are always strong as **** with decent conditioning.
Even more specifically tight ends and defensive ends.
