Are headaches after sparring normal?

Yes its normal to have headaches when you are first sparring.
Firstly, the aches are more likely to come from neck tightening as blows are absorbed as well as the obvious bumps that your head picks up. They cause a tightness around the head that can feel very much like a hangover headache or stress headache. I'd guess the headaches feel worse when you bend forward/down at the waist?
To be honest, even strenuous physical exercise can cause headaches. I'll get a slight ache after a really tough run or a hard weights session. Sparring can be very strenuous and your blood pressure can get very high, so its no real surprise.
The symptoms you feel are more likely to be muscular than brain damage. I'd show some concern if you suffer dizziness, disorientation, blurred vision, memory/speech issues or vomiting. But it really is very rare.
Keep your hands up and learn to slip blows. Its the best way forward.Last edited by Sugarj; 01-06-2012, 06:17 AM.Rockin' likes this.

Tightening your neck and clenching your jaw can contribute to it. And obviously dehydration doesn't help either.
