Dumbbell curles and punching - is it worth it?

So we know shadow boxing with very light dumbbells is standard, but how about curling higher weights? Does it increase punching power, and at what point do you reach diminishing returns?

For the record... The worlds stronger man almost equalled Ngannous punch record.. It was very close.

From what I recall, most coaches tell you to stay away from curling heavy weights because it was tighten up your arms with muscle

It does in the short term, at least

Just a thought but if you do reverse curls instead, in addition to bicep development, you'll increase wrist stiffness and the mass of your forearms, which will, theoretically, increase the power of your punches. Well, as long as you don't lose velocity.

        Momentum = Mass X Velocity

You don't need body builder biceps. It will shorten your reach.

Nothing wrong with strong biceps though.

I weight lifted for 2 years in a Weight Lifting course that was offered in High School.

I did well through that time with the boxing.

I believe that lifting during the day and then boxing at night did me good...........Rockin'

I think it helps with punching power to an extent. It strengthens your hands, wrists & forearms along with the biceps. Those can all help you punch harder, however, take it easy on the frequency since hypertrophy can slow you down and make you tire out faster.

My preference was actually to vary the grithen my chin ups. Every once in a while I would do my chin ups with a close grip which would really help with my bicep strenght and development without slowing me down.

People need to realize strength training vs size training . Any form of lifting while using compact / compound movements will increase power as long as you are actually training to box , fight , etc it’s all muscle memory . Just because you lift heavy doesn’t mean you’ll become the hulk particularly if your still in your 20”s and stressing out the body with cardio and bag work , sparring etc. Calorie intake and lifestyle, training regimes all dictate how strong you will get along with genetics and there’s multiple of great supplements available these days .

Concentration curls or type of curls that pull towards you are very good for hook punching if you also use compact movements meaning some chest , lats , pulling up on the weight maybe to use some back into it etc , to many ppl worry about lifting perfect but that’s for bodybuilders , the strongest guys use compound techniques not strict ones . This is important because a punch is a compact movement using a variety of muscles, you just don’t punch with just a particular muscle it’s impossible .

Thevtopic really shouldn’t be about any curls though , lifting in general increases bone mass , strengthening ligaments which help generate a better punch with more power , resistance strength will help with speed fast reps off a bench press ,hack squats just make you generally more athletic .

The best example of current fighters is actually Beterbiev he uses some arm wrestling training things I see with grip excercises , kettle bell, etc …these are common in that sport I saw a video on here and posters we’re surprised but if you want a better punch strengthen the hand , forearm , wrist it will make the shot more compact.

Biceps will really help rip into the hooking type punch , so those who don’t actually make an effort to increase any muscle strength only cheat themselves . Lifting is the easiest way to increase skeletal muscle and recruit fast twitch fibers for explosive movements anyone telling you din5 lift weights is in a fog at least these days , I’ve been preaching that anyone training in a form of combat weight lifting is essential if you want to be the best form if you well over 30 years . And I can still clearly remember people , trainers saying never lift weights if you box . I just could never understand the lack of common sense even at age 15 .

As Bruce Lee once said if you have two equal fighters on the same level the physical stronger one will almost always win , why would you want to be that guy who made the choice not to improve and lose to the other guy who did , why be in that position in the first place voluntarily ? Lol

I should also recommend Static training and half bicep curls if your on a heavy day to throw in . I do a ton of static training because it fatigues the muscle more and strengthening joints holding a weight in place it’s ideal fir other things like arm wrestling , grappling any martial art or striking forms etc…as well . Static training is a holding tool where you’ll be able intensify the entire arm without full range motion . I might be doing some today maybe I’ll post a vid …haha

All about shocking the muscles . This was my second set on a moderate day .
