"Turn" the front foot with the hook, that's the proper way to throw it. I have never in all my days of being involved in boxing heard of a trainer tell someone to keep that foot planted.......ever. You can't generate full power that way.

If you want to turn right push off with the left foot, to turn left, push off with the right foot. Boxing 101.........
The one thing I learned is that when I throw my hook, not to open it because then the power is being generated with the arm and it puts a lot of stress on the shoulders.

I love when people comment and don't read all my threads. I will repeat it one last time. The topic of this thread was pivoting with the front foot while throwing the hook, right?

I said the reason I teach it is because it helps teach new fighters and even experienced ones get good mechanics and HABITS so they throw their hips and body into the punch.

It's not something you are going to do everytime, or even as exaggerated but it's the right thing to teach because it makes you use your body and avoids the bad habit of throwing arm punches which I see to this day from people that think they are experts of the sport.

Oh and by the way your wrong, look in this highlight video and you will see him turning his front foot on the hook over and over. Like I said, it's not as exaggerated as you do it in the gym but he does it. EVERY GOOD FIGHTER TURNS THEIR PUNCHES TO GAIN POWER IT'S BOXING 101.

Oh yea he also steps with the lead foot into the jab, something someone on here argued with me about you shouldn't do because you would be countered......lol I don't know who is teaching you guys but I would welcome you to come to my gym anyday to help you out.

Not true. There are many types of left hook with many trainers teaching both ways and top fighters who pivot on the left foot as well as those who plant it. I have been coached to do both, and have to say that pivoting does give alot of power. However, I use the other hook on the inside to throw short, fast ones and not be put on the backfoot again. When you pivot on the foot it is hard to go forward as it puts you on the back foot. I use the hook over the top with the pivot when finishing off only or at the end of a combination

Its a gym in Miami. I used to fight and now train young kids that want to start an amateur career. I don't claim to be an expert and some of these posters don't even read my posts and respond anyway.

Bottom line like I said, pivoting your lead foot with the hook is GOOD HABIT, that's all. Your not going to do it every time in a fight and your not going to do it as exaggerated as you do in training. What it does though is teach you to throw with your hips instead of your arm.

The one thing I also teach is not to extend the arm too much because then it becomes an arm punch. You can also hurt yourself like that and even had a kid that complained about his shoulder hurting and I told him it's because he's extending the hook and that puts a lot of pressure of the shoulder.

A hook should be nice and tight, great way to practice believe it or not is on the speed bag. That's the way I was shown... Hook the speed bag without it bouncing back at you. Pin it to the side by foll wing through with the hook, great exercise to teach mechanics.

i was trained to throw power punches with feet planted, as in sitting down on your shots. and it makes sense becuase your using the ground your standing on as leverage for your lower body to shift the weight as you punch,
