    How do you throw your left hook

    I see alot of the people at my gym throw the left hook kind of far out which is weird to me cause i throw it alot more compact, how do you guys throw it?

    Throw with your shoulder twist your hips allow your weight to shift thorugh your shoulder into your hands.

      I throw it further out because i'm an outside fighter, generally, so my hook is more of a whirling motion, coming from my guard opening out past a 90* angle , push through and still bringing my weight back to my right leg. I would say it's my most effective punch, as an outside hook claps them one right on the jaw and it's really hard to defend because it comes from a range meaning they usually don't expect it. Although, my compact right hook is, I think, my most powerful punch.

      It really depends on how you fight, and inside fighter (one who fights close) obviously has to learn to a close range hook for obvious reasons, while an outside fighter would rarely use such a hook because if they did it's usually a testament to the fight not going their way (unless they move in to throw the hooks which is what I try and do).

      Ideally, no matter what style you fight in, you need to learn both. Tyson was a master of the hooks/uppercut.

      Watch this;

      The first hook is an outside hook. When he moves in closer to finish him off, you see him use the compact hook you're speaking of.

      Both are correct, you need to know both, you use them in different situations.

        if im on the inside ill throw the compact hook. if im in mid range ill throw the more stretched out hook if its open or for a counter shot or even to create an opening. from outside ill throw the lunging hook that extends farther then the mid ranged hook and depending on if im leading in with it to catch them off guard or if im feinting in will decide how far my arm is extended.

                I throw it close to my body and put my weight on my left leg to get full leverage and power. I have about 3 variations of my left hook. I also throw a super compact hook that could be considered a hook/uppercut. Also I throw a long range compact hook.

                  The shorter the better. Once you master the short hook, then you can put more of an arc into it if you need to get around the opponent's guard.

                    since we are talking about hooks here, ive been wanting to ask more people about this...

                    do yall throw your hook with your palms facing down or facing you? my trainer always tells me to throw it with the palms facing down in order to prevent injury, but almost everyone at my gym says throwing it the other way gives you more of a chance of making contact....

                    btw, i throw my hook like a bow and arrow/slingshot
