    Training handspeed

Hey guys, im heading back to the gym in the new year and just after a bit of advise on how to build up my hand speed as its something ive never truely focussed on.

Firstly, are 5lb handweights enough to make a difference in this area? (in terms of using them while shadow boxing etc). Secondly, what other techniques and drills can I use to help me along? (im looking to really improve this area, so im after as much info and help as i can get my hands on)

I'm also going to invest in a resistance band, I hear theyre pretty useful too?

holding weights while boxing does'nt help, the muscles just adapt to allow you to hold the weight while boxing, it wont make you faster when you take'em off
using weights just make your muscles larger than they need to be = slower movement, but more strength

first off, fast hands, the fact is, you either got'em, or you dont(some people obviously faster/slower than others course)
all you can do here, is throw punches as fast as you can, they'll get faster sure, but you can't have them leanord hands if you aint born with it,
make sure to do these exercises while maintaining the correct posture and technique

I'm not sure exactly how effective shadowboxing with weights is, but the above is pure garabage.

      1) If you are shadowboxing fast with weights (1 kg or 2 kg), your muscles will adapt over time, i.e. the stabilising muscles in your shoulders will get stronger and more adept at throwing faster punches. Your muscles will become more conditioned for throwing punches.

      2) You won't get bigger muscles by punching with 1kg or 2kg weights, that is absolute rubbish.

DISAGREE. Weights have helped me tremendously. Sometimes I use 2 or 3 pound weights to warm up and it definitely helps.

Also, throw a tremenous amount of fast combinations on the bag, try to throw as many punches as you can in a 3 minute interval, all speed.

You can get faster but not like FMJ handspeed for example if you're not born with it.

Cheers for the responses guys, I think ill work the bag, use resistance bands and shadowbox with weights and go from there.

I have very fast hands anyway, that basically got me to thinking what kind of potential I could have if I made them even slicker.

                1) Disagree. Yes your shoulders will get stronger (marginally) but they'll only become adept at throwing punches with more force, not necessarily faster punches.
It will also starts to disintegrate your snap, naturally.

                2) Couldn't agree more

TOTALLY disagree. Especially with the last statement. You'd be surprised what the human body is capable of. We can do some amazing things with practice, discipline and patience. You just have to know how to get there.

And you wont get bigger by punching with light weights. 5lbs is a bit heavy though, it'll put alot of strain on your tendons. If I were you I would start at two and move up a pound every one or two months and stop at 4 or 5.

When your training for speed (pure speed) you should be fresh all the time. For example, throw five 1+2 combinations with the weights resetting yourself after each one and do the same without the weights right after. Rest 3-5 minutes and do it again. Speed is governed by your nervous system and it fatigues quickly with speed work (and plyometrics & max strength) and it doesnt recover that quickly. Thats why when your lifting heavy (3-5 reps) you need a long break, sure you didnt do alot of total work and your muscles didnt really get an awesome workout but you cant just pick up the weights again after 1 minute and crank out the same reps. Your nervous system has to recover.

But you can however just shadowbox with the weights and you will get faster but when you start getting closer to your 'peak' you'll have to change methods by doing something like above.
