    Hooks to the body

    Guys i need some help.
Ive got to grips (at basics) of the jab, right straight. im working on left hook (head height) and uppercuts.
However, I cant get my body hooks. Im pretty powerful but simply cant generate power doing the body hooks. My feet twist too much when I try to do it. I know its hard for you guys to advise me without a vid but any advice would be appreciated.
PS: Ive almost made it down to my 152 lbs target weight (i weighed in at 155.5 before breakfast this morning)

practice practice practice. It took me forever to get my left hook to the body down. I would do it good on the bag, but when i would spar and fight i wouldnt throw it. It feels very awkward trying to get it in at first when fighting. The best way is to do it while sparring, because you need to get them just right and around their arms, a way a bag or shadow boxing cant help you. Im still working on it. But just keep practicing.

I personally feel like my left hook to the body is my best punch but I'm not really experienced.
I noticed when you give advice to someone Jberg you always tell them to twist their foot while punching. But I think the twisting of the foot should be a result of your hips twisting. If you let your feet loose while twisting your hip your feet twist automatically. So I think your problem is that you're actually twisting your feet on command while it should be more passive. I'm not sure about that though so please correct me if I'm wrong!

On a sidenote I find it pretty hard to generate power in a left hook to the head. How do you do that then? Somehow I just can't generate much power with my forearm parallel to the ground.

A left hook to the body is a very solid punch to have down. If you learn it and learn how to land it right, you can end a fight quickly. If the opponent can't breath, he can't fight. Most of my knockouts have been bodyshots, or were set up by the bodyshot.

When I throw it, it is in a few ways.

One will be with a combination. Jab, straight right, then the hook to the body. When you throw the right your body should be almost in position for it. Instead of throwing the hook to the head, drop down a bit, take a small step in, and turn your body with it, while piviting your front foot.

Or, I will just wait for the opponent to throw a jab, and time it. Wait for the jab, lean left and under, and land the hook.

You can also just come in with a lead left hook to the body. But you will want to be careful because it could leave you open. Make sure when you throw your hooks you are almost making your right shoulder atleast line up with their left shoulder, if not outside of it / the glove. Cover your right side and throw your hook with mean intentions. It is very risky and a smart opponent will pivit out of the way and counter you.

As far as throwing a regular hook. Your forearm should not be facing down towards the canvas. Your forearm and knuckles should be in towards you, along with your thumb up.

my coach teaches me that when you throw a left hook to the body, and you twist your front foot, you lose alot of the power in the hook because you are pulling your self away from the punch as you twist your lead foot. He teaches me that when I throw my left hook that I turn my lead foot very minimally, and do more of a twist with my rear foot. hopefully i explained it clearly.
