But he says that I'm at the perfect age and got enough time. He even went and said that even if I was 23 and started boxing I would still have enough time to do well in the sport. Then I told him that wouldn't starting at an early age would have been better. He just said.. "well if you start young what you get down is the discipline and the routine and the love for the sport, but from my experience, i seen the older guys (18-24) pick it up faster (as far as techniques). i really can't explain why because i thought that you would pick it up faster at a younger age, but from my experience, thats not the case."
The idiosyncratic experience of one person is not a reliable guide to draw any conclusions. With a bit of research you will find that 99.9% of the top players in any sport got started when they were young. There is no reason to believe that boxing is any different.
Very often you will find that some older guys who have good coordination will pick up the techniques of boxing relatively quickly. However, looking good in the gym is not the same as performing well against a real opponent, especially if he is young and hungry.

I think it matters how much u want it and on the person not the age.
Age doesnt matter to much enless u with a guy as gifted as mayweather lol but stil there are ways around beating gifted fighters that have started from a young age.

it is good to learn some self defense at a very early age. some training too. i think any form of really serious training is better to be started around the early to mid teen years, increasing in seriousness as a person ages.
i started martial arts with light contact sparring when i was six.

I've been boxing seriously since I was roughly 8, and am currently 23. But I was down the gym years before that as a kid farting around and doing silly stuff.
I was also taking Karate around the age of 3 or 4, which I did till I was about 9.
I also played Football and did some wrestling.
IMO the earlier you start the better. More experience is always a plus.

I know a few boxers, tony robinson and nate campbell etc, both top 10 boxers in there respective division who didn't start boxing to a late age.. think 28ish with very little amateur experience. They lost a handful of fights but they are top 10 fighters and ones a 3 time world champ. I'm sure there are many fighters like them... oh and carlos maussa started at 28 to. (former wba champ).
The older you are, you take it more seriously, learn faster.. when i was young, i was just trying to punch the punch bag as hard as I can.. now i'm older, i'm focussing on boxing as a sport rather than a knockout contest.

Rocky Marciano did alright and he started later than you. Marciano was a fanatic about training. Are you prepared to make that sacrifice?
