If you read the article they classify what "dietary supplements" are. All of them are completely safe if taken in the proper amounts. Hell, even Vit. C is toxic if taken in massive amounts. Same with water. I assume that most posters here are smart enough to know that and can apply some common sense and not over-do things.

still also remember, it is better to get your vitamins through consumption of food if possible rather than through supps, but if for some reason you can't, then supplements are a useful way to fill in the holes

Okay man, I guess you know everything then? And don't give me that massive amounts crap. Anything over 100% RDA is a high dose. Also relegating "supplements" to a few vitamins is ridiculous. If your talking about vitamins then say vitamins. Which are very a small fraction of dietary supplements, regardless of what the article says.

Maybe a high dose for the typical american who drinks 12 Budweisers and eats a half dozen Krispy Kremes while watching American Idol....

Not for an athlete who drains his reserve of micronutrients and taxes his body each day.....athletes have a much greater need for a comprehensive diet and it is more beficial to keep there tanks full than malnourished.....

Your body can get rid of excess nutrients when it does not need them....it cant get rid of metals such as Mercury and Lead...even these are listed wastes that your body can handle in small amounts but it lacks a way to get rid of them....Over time with enough exposure to these will lead to serious health risks....

If you are worried about dying from taking a multi vitamin, than you are just pathetic.....you have a better chance of winning the lottery than you do of overdosing on Vitamin C....shame on you people

            Oh yeah another thing.........

The recommended daily allowance is the bare minimum of each nutrient it takes to keep from being deficient in that nutrient....

It does not offer a ceiling amount or Threshold that indicates when a Vitamin becomes Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health....

Let me check my NIOSH book for Vitamin C........WTF!

This is like the blind leading the blind....

I refrain to comment on this madness anymore........

Wow, I guess there's a reason you have a 1 star rating. First of all the whole RDA crap is just that, crap. It is based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Most Americans, let alone athletes, consume that before dinner. A guy my size (6'4", 210 lbs.) needs about 1.5 times that many calories just to maintain weight. So the whole RDA goes out the window. For instance, yesterday I consumed about 1,000%+ the RDA of Vit. C, and you don't see me keeling over, I feel perfectly fine. In fact it helped me kick that minor cold's ass. If you actually read the article (which I'm pretty sure you didn't), or even the summary posted in this thread, it lists several supplements that are neither vitamins or minerals. Taken right from your link: "After reviewing the study, internist Dr. Ted Palen of Colorado Permanente Medical Group said, "I will counsel patients that moderate multivitamin intake may be beneficial, but megadoses may actually be harmful."" Sounds like what I stated in the post you quoted, huh? Use common sense and don't over-do the ****.

P.S.: learn to make the distinction between "your" and "you're", it doesn't lend you a ton of credibility when you can't get something that simple correct.

Guess that guy doesn't notice his pee yellow some days and clear some others and think: why is this? The body is very good at filtering waste and unnecessary nutrients.

Okay, Your the expert. Tell you what. Do your blood work, Analyze the results, and then you can decide what YOU need you ****ing moron. What do you think supplements are just blanket pills that do the same thing for everybody. Get yourself a ****ing clue before you start trying to school other people on what works and what doesn't. Do you have a degree in nutrition? No? Then shut the **** up.
