Worked the mitts yesterday...fingers are killing me

Yesterday I hit the mitts for the first time. After 2 rounds, I noticed my fingers were really sore, kind of cramped. I did 1 more round and then I was done for the day. The pain went away for the most part, but today when I woke up I had the same pain, just not as intense. It's kind of like a stiff pain.

Is this normal? I won't be going to the gym until tomorrow, so hopefully the pain subsides by then. Just wondering if this is a common thing.

maybe your tense...or something... you know with trying something new.

pain in your fingertips shouldn't be the norm. Try again, and hopefully it will be ok.

What are you wearing, gloves...bag gloves??... are you wearing handwraps/bandages...and how tight are they?

I was wearing handwraps(wrapped pretty tightly, but no more than usual) and gloves, 16 OZs.

The pain is starting to go away, it should be ok by the time I go the gym tomorrow.

If it still hurts tomorrow, don't hit the bag. At least, don't hit it hard. Work on form, or throw fast, light punches. If you're just getting started, DO NOT keep pushing through the pain if the pain seems out of the ordinary. As you get used to this, you will come to recognize what is "normal" pain -- this sport hurts, get used to it -- and what is not. What you are describing does not sound normal to me. Ask your trainer.

Yeah if I'm still in pain tomorrow I'll probably just shadowbox, hit the speedbag, and go a few light rounds on the heavybag. But it's slowly going away.

Yesterday the trainer asked how I was feeling after my 2nd round on the mitts. i told him the truth, that my fingers felt a little stiff, like the where cramping up, a little pain...nothing I had ever felt before. He didn't seem too concerned. But if it's still hurting tomorrow I'll say something to one of the trainers and see what they think.

My guess would be you were punching slightly upwards causing you to hit the mitts with the joint on your fingers that comes straight after your knuckles instead of your knuckles.
Alot of the times pain comes from punching incorrectly..
