    Question on the Left Hook

    Hello,
I'm very excited to join this community of fighters and fight enthusiasts. I have been training in martial arts for nearly my whole life (father was instructor) and have recently taken an active interest in boxing.

I hope that my learning boxing I can develop my inside game to compliment my long range attacks but I'm having a hard time generating adequate power from my left hook (i'm right handed) when hitting the heavy bag.

I'm currently working the hook as the third punch in a jab-straight-hook combo and as for equipment I'm using handwraps and 16 oz gloves. I'm also 5'7" and weigh 160 (not quite in fighting shape I know!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as the left hook is the single most important attack that I want to assimilate into my style.

    Thanks in advance!

welcome brother! what type of martial arts may i ask?

and if you have been training in martial arts almost your whole life and have trouble with a hook, you must be doing something seriously wrong! how can you go long without that being noticed? the hook exist in all martial arts really. don't tell me you train taekwondo or some **** like that.

hit me back, i train MA as well.

He passed away a few years back. But I agree, that would've been ideal.

Hahaha, actually I was trained in Tae Kwon Do! And I do have a "hook" that I use but I throw it by spinning my back leg around the target... I suppose it's more is more or a glorified jab while moving to my left. But I was always taught that if I was close enough I should always use my elbow or head to attack rather than my hand. I think this is why I never developed my hook properly. (you'd probably laugh when you see me head butt the bag during practice LOL)

I take no offense to the TKD comment because the way TKD is practiced today is truly a pathetic shell of it's original form which focused 70% on fist, backhand, and open hand strikes... now it's all about scrawny rubber-legged kids flailing their legs around... but enough on that.

Thanks! I'm going to vary my thumb placement and see what feels best for me.
What are the benefits and disadvantages of each form?

it is, it truly is(the tkd training). so you can imagine how i guessed. point sparring is not going to help much in a real fight. however, i am still hopefull that there are some kick ass tkd guys around.

i love korean culture - films, and especially korean pop music, but not a big fan of it's most popular MA - tkd.

anyways, bro, get with some boxing or CMA(as i do), and you'll be fine. however, if you have done tkd for a long time, be prepared to unlearn a lot.
