You may be cross eye-hand dominant. I am; I'm left-eye dominant but mostly right-handed (functionally ambidextrous -- some things left, some things right, some things both, but generally more right than left.) I feel claustrophobic and my peripheral vision is for crap in an orthodox guard -- I can't see around my left glove b/c it blocks my left eye, so I fight southpaw. There are a few other right-handed southpaws at my gym, all of whom "just felt more comfortable" southpaw; every one of them who has done the following test has turned out to be left eye dominant but right handed. This test is for shooting sports but boxing is so heavily dependent on hand-eye coordination and visual acuity that I think eye dominance is extremely relevant. Your mileage may vary.

If you are right-eye dominant AND right-handed, learn to fight orthodox or you will get KTFO. Being a southpaw is cool, but it's not worth getting your ass kicked.

    Determining your Dominant Eye

    From Archeryweb.com

Eye dominance is an often overlooked but one of the most important discoveries for any person or athlete who is participating in any sport that requires physical movement to propel an object accurately to a target or position on a field.

The following method is one of the easiest ways to checking eye dominance for both adults and even very young children:

    Eye Dominance test

    * Extend both hands forward of your body and place the hands together making a small triangle (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch per side) between your thumbs and the first knuckle.

    * With both eyes open, look through the triangle and center something such as a doorknob in the triangle.

    * Close your left eye. If the object remains in view, you are right eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the left, then you are left eye dominant.

    * To validate the first test, look through the triangle and center the object again with both eyes open.
    * Close your right eye. If the object remains in view, you are left eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the right, then you are right eye dominant.

Repeat the above test a number of times on different objects to satisfy yourself that you are sure which eye is your dominant eye.

Right eye dominant people should partake in all shooting sports as right-handed participants. Left eye dominant people should participate as lefties. Exceptions can be made to this general rule but most of the exceptions have to do with physical adversities.

Nothing wrong with a lead right every now and then.

When you do it often though, are you switching southpaw?
After a couple rounds when I need to take a breather I'll turn southpaw and use the high guard like Winky. It gives yourself a chance to get a second wind plus your using your strong hand to jab so you can def keep your opponent honest.

1st time i trained i trained as a orthrodox but at the end of the training i felt my left sore faster then my right so i switch to southpaw for that reason.

i dont know but i got go to training again to tell if if i southpaw better or not.

but i been shadowboxing as southpaw pretty long imgaine countering shot with the southpaw stance i just know to counter the straight right in the othrodox stance watching some Sanchez, Argulle and Corrales for that jabbing and left hooks with the orthodox stand is my style and counterpunching at southpaw style

if i turn southpaw that means my left hand which is not strong has to be my power shot. i think i have to realize im a southpaw with an undevelop left hand. although i see boxers like delahoya that lead with there power punch and jap punch i dont think i will be able to hurt anybody with my left

Do it several more times over the next few days and be sure. If you are left-eye dominant, it doesn't mean you have to fight southpaw; it would only explain why you feel more comfortable as a southpaw. Your preferred stance has to be your choice -- and your coach's, too.

Make sure you discuss this with your trainer or coach at the outset, b/c if they train you southpaw and then see you writing right-handed, you'll have some 'splainin to do.

That test is confusing. How close are you hands ment to be? Also, it depends which hand your eyes are in front of, and your eyes see double vision

I orgininally was orthodox, but switched to southpaw as I cant turn my hip properly with my right foot due to my foot being externally rotated/ and or/ my hip muscles being tight.
