Floyd's natural weight is not 147, so he'd probably lose to all of them. Although I think he has a chance with Hearns if Hearns power doesn't bother him.

Could Floyd really beat some of the great welterweights like...

Abe, thanks for that Ray Robinson video. Ray was masterful in his day.
So were the others. You know, it's always hard to compare old boxers with the new ones due to many different factors. For ex: the improvement and evolution of todays fighters. Also, the old fighters trained for 15+ rounds compared to the 12 of today. But, my guess is if PBF fought SRR today, it would probably end in a draw. Ray Robinson had a mean killer instinct.

20 years ago is 1986. Not exactly distant history. There may have been advances in nutrition and certain physical training techniques but the guys we are talking about were as primed and trained as anyone today. Boxing training has not changed that much. In fact it seems that most training and exercise techniques from prior decades still are used.
If you watch as many Leonard fights as Floyd fights you will have a pretty good grasp of their respective abilities. If you are familiar with their opponent's abilities as well then you can see how they deal with certain qualities of fighters and styles too.
Leonard, Duran and Hearns were the cream of their generation. They fought each other which makes it easier to compare and classify them. They had all respectively destroyed high level competition. Not beat, DESTROYED. I personally find it quite easy to compare.
Floyd is an excellent boxer. He would not beat Floyd, Duran, Hearns or Robinson.

natural talent/gifts, are still rare...forget the other athletes that are using steroids to make-up for their poor genes, I am talking about "natural" guys...If we are so advanced today as yesterday, where is BO JACKSON 2? How come every fighter doesn't have the power of Foreman or the speed of Ray Leonard?
Maybe we should talk about work-ethic...maybe if some of these heavyweights would follow the work-ethic of some of the guys from "back in the day" we might have Heavyweights that don't get tired in the 3rd round, or show up with a spare tire around their waist
Compare these 3:
Floyd is today's Leonard....Margarito, I guess is Hearns....Duran, maybe Hatton
Wow, what evolution has given usLast edited by Abe Attell; 09-16-2006, 09:23 PM.

Floyd is one of my favorite fighters today...But he is too small to compete with yesterdays great welters. They all had comparable skills along with greater strength and punching power. Leonard took shots from Hearns...Do you think Floyd can hurt him? Hearns competed well against Ray Leonard...so Floyds speed wouldnt be anything new. SRR was relentless and would put lil Floyd on his A$$!

I'm sure there were many top caliber opponents back in the day too.
Monkey Boy's right training hasn't changed much. It really comes down to heart, determination and a serious killer instinct. But you could also say the dollar signs will motivate jsut about anyone to become great.
