I like the Contender but are they asking for trouble?

The Contender has been a wonderful show-sure if you are a cult fan it can be somewhat annoying when you listen to some novice talk about Peter Manfredo or Sergio Mora like they are the two best fighters in the world, but hey any publicity is good publicity for our wounded sport-so in that regard I cant complain.

Now for the problem...the new contender has certainly gotten the attention of many fighters out there in many different weight classes. Many of these fighters are never going to be world champions...I venture to say in this new series that there is not one guy I look at and say "this guy could be a champ"

The real problem is with these fighters from 130 pounds all the weigh to 168 pounds all coming together to fight at 147...the fame that Mora and Manfredo and Alphonso all recieved is just too addicting to a guy like Ebo Elder who in his head knows he will never headline a big fight card or make anywhere near six figures for fighting.

Ill pick on Ebo for a second (there are others as the 2 of the first 3 fights showed)...he is a 135 fighter plain and simple...and even at that weight if you have watched Ebo fight a little bit you see a real resemblance to a punching bag.

Imagine Ebo squares off with Nicolas Cervera...Cervera fought his last fight at 168 pounds against Librado Andrade a very young legit bad ass...he has fought Jermain Taylor at 160...sure he was stopped in both those fights but Nick can fight and if he was pitted against a fighter like the 135 pound Ebo Elder...bad things could happen.

The contedner is great but are the weight discrepencies just too great?

I know one thing...you better keep Ebo away from Cervera otherwise disaster has a better then average chance of happening.

Cmon Contender-gets these guys a little closer together in weight.

i sorta agree. although, these fighters have worked their asses off their entire life and deserve a chance like this. Some put on weight and some lose it.

I see your point but all the guys know what they are getting into. They're profssional fighters. Plus the guys coming from 168 have to be somewhat weight drained and that should temper their power. More of a factor seems to be size/reach differential as you saw with Wright-Eason. Eason is a good fighter, but simply couldn't get inside on a much bigger guy.

I agree and also the show is 60 mins long why can't they show 15 ****ing mins of fighting so we can see the whole fight instead of their over blown ****** ass highlight fight. They must have worked hard to keep the last fight interesting Wright appeared to be pummeling Eason most of the time.

Ebo Elder vs. Nicolas Cervera is the next best thing to a televised execution.

Took the words out of my mouth. If there is one thing I can't stand about the show its that they don't show the fights in their entirety. It pisses me off because it allows the show to dictate who won the fight regardless of what actually happened. And don't even get me started and those ***** sound effects.

cervera is a big mother****er, how the **** do they expect the smaller dudes to compete. but anyway, if you saw him fight Librado Andrade (mexican super middleweight) you saw him get hisass beat in an exciting fight. he's an ok but no ****en contender, after like 4 rounds he was turning his back cuz andrade was wacking his ass all over the place.

Yeah because look at the **** decisions the judes dished out after the show like in the Mora/Manfredo rematch and When Brinkley got beaten by Bontsante but got the gift.....amybe they don't want people to get pissed and stop watching if a scoring dispute happens....so like you said they want to dictate what they want us to see.
