Comments Thread For: Loeffler: MSG Making a Big Play To Snatch Canelo vs. Golovkin II

According to Tom Loeffler, promoter for WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), there is a serious push coming in from New York's Madison Square Garden to secure his boxer's HBO Pay-Per-View rematch with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The fight was officially announced earlier this week, for May 5th, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.

The Garden can guarantee a bigger sales gate but Loeffler also says the taxes are a problem? This sounds counter productive for boxing sales and Vegas standards?

Not just the taxes New York forces promoters to have extra insurance. Ever since Mike Perez put that Russian dude in the hospital.

Why would you move this from Vegas to MSG? MSG holds around the same as Tmobile. If you're moving it from Vegas it should be moved to a bigger stadium to accommodate more fans.

I don't see it. Think Tommy L just saying this to get Vegas to up their offer probably or something like that.

I don't see how anyone in the US is gonna offer more $ than a Vegas casino. Specifically MGM Grand/T-Mobile.

Yea but whats the gate at MSG or some other even bigger venue?

Thats part of the problem too. You can do better gate in Vegas despite some arenas being able to seat a lot more fans. So more gate + the casino giving you that casino pay bump means MSG or whoever is gonna have to overcome the casino pay bump + the gate disparity.

I don't see how it makes sense for maybe the biggest fight to make in boxing still. Sure gate is only a piece & the PPV pie is gonna be the biggest source of revenue, but you'd still be leaving money on the table by not putting the fight in Vegas it'd seem like to me.

Yep. If you're gonna use a different venue to get Vegas to offer more money it should be a venue that holds a lot more people. This is so unbelievable he might as well have said they were looking at holding it in the Pontiac Silverdome

i have a place to stay in nyc and it will make it much easier for me to get people to go with as i live in RI....but as several have already pointed out...it doesnt make much sense

It'd be nice to have the fight at msg but Canelo /golden boy are not going to agree to fight in a venue where the crowd support isn't likely to be overwhelmingly in favor of Canelo. They've never done it in the past so aren't likely to start now since they're the A side.
