Comments Thread For: Lemieux's Promoter Expects To Be Back on HBO Before Saunders

Last Saturday night in Canada, former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux came up short to capture gold when he was dominated over twelve rounds by Billy Joe Saunders, who holds the WBO middleweight championship. After that contest, Lemieux and his co-promoter, Camille Estephan, complained - that in their opinion - Saunders had no intention of fighting and just wanted to move around the ring for twelve rounds.

I'm sure HBO would rather have Saunder back but are stuck with Lemieux cuz he's a Golden Boy fighter.

Let's be honest....Lemieux was completely outclassed. He is a basic slugger who does well against b-level opposition. Anyone with footwork beats him. He may be back on HBO as an opening bout or as a B-side for a big name. He's not star material. He's not a Gatti level action fighter. Go back to Canada for undercard bouts.

Arturo Gatti generated action and ratings, getting date after date on HBO, despite the fact that he was not exactly considered to be among the top fighters in his division. It's the same thing with Lemieux. Sky Sports or Box Nation may be content featuring Sanders' fights, but he isn't exactly must-see TV.

The vast majority of HBO subscribers who tuned-in that night were not there to watch Saunders move around defensively. They tuned-in to see Lemieux knock-out some British cream puff. Do you think that Saunders style made them want to see more of him?
Congratulations to Saunders on the victory, but he didn't really do himself many favors when it comes to marketing himself to a new audience.
To be fair, that much movement is out-of-character for Saunders, and it was obviously motivated by the threat of Lemieux's power. But who's to say he wouldn't flee around the ring from Golovkin in a similar unappealing way?

But then again, HBO has been making some baffling moves lately. Who knows what they'll do.

                  Lemieux needs to:

                  1. Stay in shape, get a better nutritionist or something. With his height, he should not have so much trouble making 160.

                  2. Get a new trainer to actually work on his jab and footwork and setting up power shots vs boxers.

Once those things happen, I'd definitely like to see him back on HBO. Lemieux vs Chavez Jr would be a good fight at 168.
