GGG Vs Canelo: How Badly Has This Been Promoted?

The whole fight promotion has been abysmal. Compare it to Floyd Vs Conor this has been a snooze feature.

How many times did we see Oscar crying about the Floyd fight?

The mission should have been to build and promote this KO artist of his generation Vs Mexican gladiator of our times banquet.

They did nothing. They should have started promoting this properly to get it in the mainstream by any means necessary.

Headlines, publicity the gloves should be off.

How would you have promoted it?

Even HBO only has 2 episodes of 24/7 up.

That's not really a fair comparison, May.McG will probably never be topped so putting ANY fight against it is really not fair.

I actually think they've done an alright job, of course it could always be better.

De La Hoya's whole promo was crapping on May-Mac, Mayweather era, and comparing it to Haglar Hearns like he did with Canelo-Chavez. Oscar needs a spokes person, he can still be the face but needs a new mouthpiece.

actually I thought the old grindhouse bar commercial would invite many casual watchers, especially the UFC followers that resonated to boxing afterwards with curiousity

the voiceover promo sounds cowboyish correct? ***** style supporters would buy this

I'll tell you What, there's definitely hype for this fight in the UK even amongst casuals, and that's very rare for two non british fighters fighting oversees. Several people who I know don't really follow box ing are actually going to be tuning in for this at 4am.

It hasn't been that bad, all things considered. They only had three real weeks to promote. The world was focusing on May-McGregor.

The commercial was pretty cool, mainly because Duran and Hearns were there.

HBO 24/7s were boring as hell, I fell asleep through both episodes. Watching 24/7 nowadays makes really miss Mayweather and Pacquiao. Canelo and GGG are nice guys, but their personalities are boring as hell.

Real talk. I didn't even reach the half of that 24/7 episode for Canelo-GGG.

                Characters. Drama.

Mayweather and McGregor know how to work crowds. Floyd himself even said he liked that he was finally across from someone who could share in the fight promotion, since in the past that was all him.

Remember the lead up to Cotto/Margacheato 2? PERFECTLY promoted as two guys who simply got beef fresh off one taking a knee, controversy with wraps, ranting at each other in Spanish, etc. It was perfect.

Mosley/Mayorga? The butt slap heard around the world (staged or not)? Created controversy, got people talking.

Golovkin is as dull as a doorknob.
Canelo's already been outed as FOS ("Mexicans don't F*** around"!)

If you're going to ask people to pay $80/pop to see your fight, you'd better damn well know how to promote it effectively, and your fighters can't do it, a talkpiece needs to do it, ala Ruben Guerrero, Angel Garcia, Uncle Roger, Floyd Sr., Yoel Judah, Norman Stone, etc.

For all of Arum's faults, he always spoke the truth about Oscar. He said he's a bimbo who doesn't bring any substance to a board room. He has a great name in the ring. Out of the ring, he's an airhead, coke head, alcoholic, & a cross-dresser.
This promotion with Canelo dressed up like a cowboy in a western saloon?! WTF?!!
This was an embarrassing marketing strategy, which is what you'd expect with Oscar finally at the helm of a major fight promotion.
Parts of the 24/7's were actually interesting, but Pac vs (insert classic opponent here) got better promotion than this.
This fight was sold long ago for hardcores.
This fight needed a better marketing plan for casuals.
They're going to leave a lot of money on the table.

I liked that B&W commercial they had. Not sure on the syndication and frequency. The goal should have been to get it in terrestrial television so the common folk would see it. Not sure if thats too expensive and out of budget though.
