Comments Thread For: McGregor-Malignaggi Sparring Session Erupted, Says Joe Cortez

Hall of Fame retired referee Joe Cortez claims he ordered Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi to calm down after a rough sparring session threatened to spiral out of control last week. The legendary official, who has overseen fights involving the likes of Mike Tyson, George Foreman and Oscar De La Hoya, was called in by the McGregor camp to help the Irishman acclimatise to the rules of the sport during his preparations to fight Floyd Mayweather on August 26.

Huh, maybe that's why Paulie has been so dismissive of McGreggor. Not that I would expect Paulie to be impressed but I did think he would hype up Conor rather than write him off as he's been doing.

The ref always favors the house fighter, and yet these analysts like Haye always try to dress it up with some random motive, like "the ref wanted to be the star of the show." It's always some random reason that they favor the house fighter. They never call it for what it really is, corruption. Because if Cortez really just wanted to be the star of the show, the easiest way to do that would be to penalize the star fighter, Floyd Mayweather. Put that fighter in a position where he might lose. Deduct two points from him, and threaten to DQ him for the first loss of his career. That would make Cortez the real star of the show, and get everyone talking about him.

But did he do that? No, he penalized Hatton instead, and helped Floyd, just like every other ref. When there's a pattern that always benefits the house fighter, that is not random referees wanting to be the star of the show, or making honest mistakes. That is corruption. And if the likes of David Haye can't be honest about that, then they're not trustworthy either, because they also make they money in this game, so maybe he is going along to get along.

Sounds like Paulie was outboxing Connor. The latter got frustrated and went ufc on his azz.

Note Cortez saying they were holding and punching. I had to break it up
