Interesting how when a Mexican criticizes canelo such as Marquez, or Chavez, or Barrera, they're perceived to be haters. Could it just be that they're speaking the truth and don't like seeing a guy whi claims to be the best in the world blatantly duck a top fighter and choose to fight little guys instead?

Boxing history is just too full of so-called "A" sides dictating things for me to interpret what happened between Canelo and Lil g as a "duck".
It's more complicated than that.
If we don't call Golovkin asking Ward to lose 4 pounds for a fight a way of ducking, we can't call Canelo asking Golovkin to lose 4 or 5 pounds a way of ducking.
JMM is certainly entitled to his opinion but he is too smart to get this one as wrong as he has.
So him saying this mean there is an agenda there IMO.

I like Canelo, and there is no question in my mind that left to his own devices, he would have been in the ring with GGG already.
Reason he hasn't is nothing to do with his willingness to go there, its everything to do with his management team making MBA spreadsheet decisions on what he does next.
Why doesn't he over-rule them we cry ? I bet he's thought about it, but at the end of the day he's got a team to do the thinking for him so he can focus entirely on the boxing. That the team have let him down and embarrassed him will come out in his autobiography one day.
De La Hoya should have let him loose on GGG and let it happen. THAT was the smart move. It would have been a no-lose situation (assuming his team pulled him if he started to take a beating like Brook's team did)
Win or lose, Canelo would have got props for taking a fight many other 160lbers are scared to (Mexican pride expectations met).
(1) If he lost, so what ? (again assuming his team pull him in before any career changing damage could happen). He's still the hero for going there (in the eyes of many, and I suspect all of Mexico), and no credibility lost as he stepped up in weight (like Khan and Brook, they retain credibility at their own weight level)
(2) and if he won.....
I actually agree with his team's approach in some ways - Canelo's best option would be to announce that he will go to 160, take 2 tune-ups to bed in at 160, then fight 3 is GGG, no ifs, no buts, if you don't like it, tough and stfu, but that's whats happening.
HOWEVER, that ceased to be the smart option because of the belt. Giving up the belt should never have been considered - yes it forces Canelo into the ring sooner than the smarter option allowed but there are 3 prime directives if you are a Mexican belt holder (1) you don't give it away (2) ditto (3) ditto
His team have basically mismanaged him - they should have let him take the GGG fight, even if it was too soon.
edit. on reflection, the smart thing would have been to negotiate the Cotto fight without the belt on the line. If Canelo (or his team) said '..hey, this is a 155 catchweight fight, MW is 160, this doesn't deserve the belt to be on the line, it should only be won at 160 ...' then who's going to disagree with that ? Then Plan A could have been executed and no pride lost.....quite the opposite, a statement about belts and weights that many would have cheered....Last edited by angkag; 11-26-2016, 11:00 AM.

Canelos reputation is of his own doing.
Chavez Sr, Marquez, and El Gallo Estrada among others have put it out there time and time again.
I'm seeing more GGG gear on Mexicanos lately too which is surprising to me.Last edited by KeyboardWarrior; 11-26-2016, 11:50 AM.

Ward is a bum. Watch and learn.
Andre Ward is lying….
....actually Ward who is only talking through his hat....Ward called out GGG one hour after it was announced that GGG had a contract to fight Lemieux.....this can be checked out for a fact in the transcripts……second of all GGG's team had been trying to come to an agreement for two years with Ward....the problem was first Ward was in trouble with law suits with Goossen...they were suing each other....Goosen won the lawsuit three times.....then Ward signed with Roc Nation....the first thing Roc Nation said was that Ward needed two tune up fights before they would let Ward fight GGG...then Ward fought one fight at 172 pounds....GGG and his team got tired of waiting for Andre Ward to make up his mind what he wanted to do...then look at the numbers....Ward fought in his own home town and he could not put 4000 people in the arena....Ward fought at the Citizens centre and there were only 3000 people....every single word I have put here can be checked out by anybody simply by looking at the transcripts....and if that is not enough for you then here is a video by Tom Loeffler.....either Loeffler is lying or Ward is lying....only problem with that is that the transcripts will back up Loeffler and not Ward..

When The fight happens, if ever, it will be a lose-lose situation for Chickenelo: 1) if he loses, everybody will say that Chickenelo has always been a hyped boxer and never had what it takes to beat a superior boxer; 2) if he wins, everybody will say that he waited for GGG to get older and slower to fight him. This win will always have a (*) next to it. For these reasons, I doubt we ever see this fight. I see the coward fighting the Cottos, Bradleys, Trouts, etc of the world and just waiting for GGG to move up before calling him out again!
