Remember when he was top five P4P on some lists? Then he got 1st round KO'd by Gonzalez. And then lost to Santa Cruz. Now it's been a full year since he's fought and as far as I know, has nothing on the horizon.

The guy is pretty much completely irrelevant now it seems.

What the hell happened? Did Gonzalez take his soul with that 1st round KO?

Mares almost reminds me of Mike Jones to some degree. Mike wasn't a pound for pound guy (obviously), but he was considered an elite prospect. Then got KO'd ruthlessly by Bailey and then just completely disappeared off the face of the earth.

Mares has fought a few times since the Gonzalez stoppage but still, he has seemingly fell off a cliff also.

It's scary how quickly a fighter can fall to irrelevancy.

Mares should never have been considered p4p but he was/is a very good fighter but like many careers, modern day inactivity is killing it.

He lost to a journeyman with power, call it a fluke. He then lost to a guy who had a size advantage. Fair enough. All is not lost but he should have stayed more active.

Look at the opponents this guy beat, a fighter like that doesn't become suit over night.
