There seems to be a lot of people on here who see andre ward as a p4p top fighter, even with his recent inactivity over the last years, based on strength of his CV and past exploits. But is his opposition really that good?
Brand- old man coming up to 40 who was 168 pounder, took ward the distance
Barrera- old unproven cuban, a nobody really, took ward the distance
Smith- limited UK domestic level fighter, groves demolished him in 2, ward took 9 rounds
Rodriguez- another nobody who ward couldnt finish off
Dawson-pascal beat him fairly easy before dawson fought ward, stevenson put him away in 1 round, it took ward 10. Not a great fighter at all tbh, karpency beat him later too
Froch- wards best win and a good name on the record, although close fought, 115-113 on two cards. Plus froch not too hard to outbox, andre dirrell and jermain taylor both managed it for large chunks of the fight
Abraham- big stiff classical european plodder, lost every round to froch
Bika- a walking human punchbag who can take a good shot
Green- useless, completely useless, took ward the distance. 70 year old Glen johnson coming into ring with a zimmerframe managed to put green away inside the distance. one of the worst fights of all time
Kessler- technical decision, stopped on cuts due to wards headbutting. Frequent head butts throughout the fight. A good but not amazing fighter who calzaghe beat fairly comfortably (117-111 on one card as hbo scored it too)
Miranda- limited fighter with a big shot and not much else, bute put him away, pavlik put him away, he took ward the distance
Am i being harsh or is wards CV really not that impressive? Discuss...
In my opinion pound for pound should be based on on how well a boxer is performing and how good his opposition is within the last 18 months or so. What a boxer did 5 or 6 years ago shouldn't have **** to do with how he rates pound for pound today. All Ward has done in the last two years is dominate two very mediocre opponents. That's not pound for pound worthy to me.
yeah thats the thing. With someone like mayweathers CV, if he had 4 or 5 **** years you would still have to rank him highly. But ward had a 'good' CV before 2011, and couple that with 5 years of fighting noone/bums, it doesnt look good at all...
two of the judges scored it 115-113. I thought it was close when i watched it, ward was making froch look sloppy but wasnt really landing great combos or anything like that. No doubt ward won it though but it was close

so fights are close now if judges have bad cards?
that fight wasnt' close. can you tell me which rounds you thought froch won, when you get a chance, and why?
you don't have to be an eye catching fighter or beating somebody up to win rounds. you just have to be the more effective puncher.
froch had no answers for ward on the outside, and on the inside he wasn't landing hte more effective punches. IIRC i gave froch round 11 convincingly, and one other. even then, the froch rounds are not rounds he ran away with.
haven't watched the fight in a while, but i've seen it several times. froch lands very few clean, effective punches, which are the meaningful criteria when you score a fight. find the highest definition feed you can, turn the sound off, and score for yourself. and do yourself a favor and steer clear of british commentary. they're good blokes, but they're always in favor of the british fighter. in america we import so much talent that nationality becomes much less of an issue. our announcers are usually biased because of relationships between the networks and the promotors

cant be arsed to watch it again, was a boring fight really cause of wards negative tactics. Just scrappy throughout, most rounds didnt have a clear winner thats what i remember, dont know how it would work out if i scored it round by round. Will agree about bias british commentators lol

if you really watch the fight closely on a feed with good definition you'll see froch landing almost nothing cleanly, and ward landing a lot of punches that froch legit doesn't see until after they bounce off of his face. it's fine if you don't want to watch it again, becaues it's a long fight and not very exciting, just take the word of somebody who has seen it several times and scored the rounds. that fight was not close if you score the rounds. 10-2 is about right. froch had a lot of trouble landing cleanly, and ward had virtually no trouble at all when he opened up.
Froch lost every round to Ward though the last 2 rounds were close.
Ward's best win by far is Kessler whom was the super 6 fave. He went on to easily win and Kessler went on to outman Froch just after I had it 8-4 to kessler.
... in fact, one cannot say much against Ward's resume...
... Ward holds lots of athletic and boxing skills... his style seems to be sometimes twisted and chameleonic...
... of course he was protected (especially by Hearshman), of course that he usually fought in his backyard and got a pass from the refs when he needed...
... and of course that Ward holds one of the best plus/minus ratio in the sport to date...
