James was a bad man...........I think he could do it..........
Thoughts?????
No doubt. I would say it would be a 50/50 fight with GGG (I really think he's that special) and I would favor him in a Kovalev fight, but other than that I don't think anyone else has a chance.
Toney was a truly special fighter. One of the greatest to ever lace em up. But when it's all said and done, I think Kovalev and GGG will be in that conversation as well.
GGG has a good chin, better fundamentals, fights better from the outside, has better work rate, and the power to make you respect him. It will go to a decision but GGG's activity, and superior skill will earn him the decision.
I think he could dominate in today's division. GGG would be his only threat, but GGG has never fought anybody with a defense like Toney's. Toney was very undisciplined though, and that may have been his downfall in a high stakes match. I would have loved to see how Toney would have handled Hagler or even Hopkins though.

You could have metal gauntlets and Toney isn't going anywhere.
His natural instincts are insane and people forget that a 160 Toney was an in shape Toney. I'm admittedly a huge Toney fan but GGG will have to beat a pulse before I give him any fantasy fights over guys who had actual real life fights. Toney's defensive instincts and timing are all time caliber imo. Veeery quick at 160. Could crack.. And a nuclear bunker chin. At 160 you better bring some superman (heheh heh) gifts/attributes against Toney.
Toney was an absolute monster... His balance and rhythm were magical. Dude could time you from ANYWHERE from any position..to the body or head...amazing at catching and throwing between punches. From what we've actually seen of GGG it's almost a mismatch in Toney's favor. What are people actually thinking with some of these responses? Toney taking heavyweight bombs by heavyweight power punchers and NEVER cowered. An in shape Toney (which he was at 160) is one of the naturally gifted fighters I've ever seen. The way he moved, countered, came forward or layed back, etc..I'll never pick a come forward type guy (much as I like GGG and also think he has good skill) who's unproven and biggest claim is "power" vs Toney at 160... You better show me something more special than Toney before I believe it. 168? All his. Degale would be in Narnia serving the ice queen with Khan. 175 is tricky because Kovalev uses his range and gets in and out. Amazing scrap this would have been. Ward doesn't have the fire to out gun Toney because Toney was just as crafty if not more and I have a hard time imagining Ward out maneuvering Toney. Ward is deceptively fast though and that works in his favor. Good scrap. I got Toney but not by much... Whens the last time Ward fought someone as quick as him?
