Comments Thread For: Roach Tabs Canelo's Stamina as His Downfall To KO Loss

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, who handles WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, feels Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) will start strong, fade as the fight continues, and eventually succumb to a knockout loss in the late rounds.

Cotto will defend his championship against Canelo on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The bout is going to take place at catch-weight of 155-pounds. [Click Here To Read More]

This could be a big factor in the fight as long as the fight lasts.

I think Canelo will always have a stamina issues at any weight. I don't think it's due to him cutting weight in the past, it's just how he is. Obviously you can train to improve stamina but everyone has a different ceiling in terms of how good they can be in certain areas, and i feel Canelo's ceiling for stamina is pretty low, it will only go to a certain point. That's his nature, but he is strong in other areas.

I'm still picking Canelo to win though but the longer this fight goes, the more interesting it's going to be because i think Cotto can go 12 rounds fighting as long as he isn't taking too much punishment.

I feel Roach and Cotto's gameplan is to try to box and move a lot in the first half of the fight, even run at times if they have to, getting Canelo to use a lot of energy trying to catch him, then turn up the pressure as Canelo gets tired. Canelo has no poker face either, even a blind man can see when he's exhausted.

I give the stamina edge to Cotto but Canelo stamina was good against Lara

Usually stamina doesn't fade when your walking around not getting hit. That was a very low energy fight, except for when Lara jumped clear across the ring.

Interesting strategy but I doubt that would work. I doubt canelo would burn himself out against an opponent like Cotto. If Cotto were to have a chance he would have to keep the fight in the middle of the ring and outbox Canelo.

Dumb suggestion. how's about out boxing alvared all over the ring. that affects his stamina.

I don't think it takes an awful lot to burn him out though. Cotto isn't going to literally run like Lara to the point where Canelo isn't expending much energy.

If Cotto decides to move to take Canelo into the later rounds, i think him and Roach would have a game plan in place using their experience to do it in a way where Canelo is using a lot of energy doing so.

I'm not saying it will even work, but i have a feeling that will be part of the plan. If Cotto boxed and moved like the second Margarito fight, it could possibly frustrate Canelo to the point of where he's trying too hard and using a lot of energy in the process.

Can he do that against Canelo though? I'm not sure. In fact i'm not even sure how much Cotto has left, it's hard to say. I'd say he's been very carefully matched in the past couple of years to look good.

Then again, you could say Canelo hasn't looked great against the best fighters he's faced. Lost to Floyd, fair enough. The Lara fight was very close and the Trout fight was no walk in the park, far from it. I consider these the best 3 fighters he's faced, Mosley was shot. And he wasn't exactly impressive in any of them and you could make a valid argument that being 2-1 out of the 3 fights is generous.

This is why its an exciting fight. I'm still not totally sold on Canelo for the above reasons and again, I haven't entirely bought into this Cotto resurrection under Roach either.

My feeling is that it's a very big fight with two big names who are not quite as good as the weight of their names suggest. But it will be a good fight and i lean towards Canelo.

Canelo does have dreadful stamina for an elite boxer. He only fights half rounds.
