Comments Thread For: Cotto Overwhelmed Sluggish Geale, Says CompuBox

All Cotto. He doubled up the sluggish Geale in total punches landed, and also landed 8 jabs per round thru the first three rounds. Cotto closed the show by landing 17 of 34 power shots in round four.

Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto retained his World Boxing Council middleweight world title with a crushing victory over Australia's Daniel Geale. Cotto knocked down Geale twice in the fourth round before referee Harvey Dock stopped the bout at 1:28 of the fourth.

Cotto dominated from the opening bell in front of a crowd of 12,100 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

I don't think we can glean that much from the compubox stats. For one, compubox is notoriously inaccurate.

However Golovkin is a lot more aggressive than Cotto. Geale was forced to eithter try and gain GGG's respect or get overwhelmed, so he had to throw quite high volume just to stem GGG's aggression and survive. Cotto was not marching forward, was moving much more so Geale had to think about how to attack.

To have been as busy against Cotto as he was vs GGG, Geale would have needed to be walking Cotto down. You could argue that the weigh cut made him a little wary about gassing so he did not press early. You could equally argue that he simply was not good enough or strong enough to do it given that Cotto was walking him on to shots whenever he did engage.

Probably about as long as Cotto would last against GGG.
