Comments Thread For: Ann Wolfe: Kirkland Was Too Inactive To Face Canelo

James Kirkland was simply not prepared to step in the ring with a fighter like Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez ... so says his ex-trainer Ann Wolfe who tells TMZ Sports he took the fight way too soon.

Kirkland suffered a brutal knockout in the third round of his fight with Alvarez this weekend in Houston... after parting ways with Wolfe (his longtime trainer) earlier this year.

Wolfe tells us ... Kirkland's first mistake was taking such a huge fight after a taking nearly a 17 month hiatus from the ring.

He was inactive before the fight, and definitely inactive in round 3.

doesn't he already have a round 1 or 2 ko loss to a Japanese substitute teacher?

Ann speaks the truth. Kirkland wasn't ready for this fight - the end result proved this. Kirkland avoided Wolfe because he did not want to face the truth: that he had too long a layoff for this big a fight.

Kirkland just isn't a top dog even though canelo picked him at the right time he would still not be able to beat canelo but the fight would have lasted longer

It comes down to a styles thing really. Kirkland's style is tailor made for Alvarez, just watch the Angulo fight and see how Canelo eats up any fighter with that style. He pretty much did the only sensible thing given his abilities, go for broke and swing for the fences early in the fight and hope something gives. He had no choice but to go out on his shield when that gameplan didn't work, which is admirable, at least he gave the fans a fun fight. No trainer in the world was going to get James to fight like Lara or Mayweather at this point. Wolfe would have only amplified his style, but the end result would have been the same no matter what IMO.

Kirkland does two things well. He can punch and he can block a punch with his head better than anyone in boxing today. I think Everlast should license his likeness for the new " kIRKLAND PUNCHING BAG" One or two more fights like this one and they'll have to fit him with a drool cup.

People need to stop making excuses for losses. You don't see Floyd Mayweather complaining about anything with his loss to Pacquiao. He just moves on to thinking retirement. As should Kirkland.
