Comments Thread For: Billy Joe Saunders Could Land WBO Interim Title Shot

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has confirmed that Hatfield’s Billy Joe Saunders, 21-0 (11) will be in the hunt for an interim title, should Andy Lee’s shoulder injury keeps him out of action beyond this summer's mandatory deadline date.

Saunders is mandatory challenger to Andy Lee's WBO title, which he won by stopping Matt Korobov in Las Vegas last December then retained via a split draw after New York's Peter Quillin failed to make weight earlier this month. As per WBO rules, the parties have a 30-day negotiating period before the fight gets sent out to purse bids. [Click Here To Read More]

He should fight GGG for the interim title, GGG would put up his WBC interim title, then GGG could have two mandatories lined up for him.

Is this the first we're hearing of a shoulder injury?

It's the first I've heard of it. I wonder what happened because he sure as hell didn't hurt in during the fight because he didn't throw enough punches to put much stress on it.

Well you can't put up mando challenges for different organizations belts without waiver and wbo just turned down that same exact situation for kamedi if not mistaken

Different situation. The situation that was turned down was a 'unification' fight between a major title and a minor title. Not the same thing at all. I am talking about someone fighting for mandatory challenger status just as GGG did against Rubio while holding the WBA championship. Golovkin won the WBC interim title that day and he could do the same against Saunders for the WBO interim title. That would make GGG the WBA title holder and the mandatory for two other major titles. All that would be missing would be the IBF title.

An interim title is not the same as a so called 'regular' title. It only infers mandatory challenger status, nothing more.

I like Lee, but fuck this. :angry2:

This is exactly why I hate the concept of interim belts. If the champion cannot defend - injury, promoter problems, legal issues; don't care - they should be stripped immediately and a fight made for the vacant title between #1~3, who are ready and waiting. When the former champ is able to fight again, give them an automatic shot.

              Logic? In boxing? Nahhhh...

So now I'm thinking he's doing this to make a fight.

I feel like we would've hear of an injury within a week...hell, even 2

How long do you give them to recover from an injury? It has to be as long as you allow your champions to go without defending their title at all. Chances are good that Lee will be out of action for much less than a year, which is how much time will have passed before Cotto makes his first title defense.

However, I really do not see the necessity of an interim champion belt. Saunders is the mandatory challenger now and he will remain so up until the point Lee returns. At that point, he will get his title shot and life will go on. There is no reason for the champion to have a voluntary defense after an injury.

But all sanctioning bodies should have a time limit for their title holders to defend their title. I say it should be minimum 6 months against a top 10 ranked contender and once a year against the number one ranked contender.

The only thing an interim title is really for is to keep the organization's name out there when fights are made and to pull in a sanctioning fee.

The whole point of Lee & BJS fighting in the summer was so it could be a stadium fight, but even minor shoulder injuries take forever to heal.

BJS still hasn't announced his opponent for May 9th, seems like they'd be jumping the gun giving him a interim title fight for July.
