Comments Thread For: HBO Tops Showtime In Ratings Battle for 4/18 Shows

Between HBO and Showtime, boxing fans were treated to in-ring action on April 18 comprising of: the most watched fighter of 2014; a fight whose participants separately served in the past two Fight of the Year recipients; and the 2014 BWAA Fighter of the Year.

Because the networks went head-to-head (a disturbing tradition that seems to occur around this time every year), the audiences were divided on the action, with HBO winning the network battle but plenty of fans tuning in overall. [Click Here To Read More]

It was hardly a dip for Provo like the article says, but a decent increase from 1 million to over a million and a quarter.

Chavez's brand is ruined. He can't sell tickets anymore (which has been true for his last few fights) and now he can't even get tv ratings which he used to be the king of. I think its safe to say boxing fans and especially mexican-american fans can't stand him.

Damn HBO stomped out Showtime. Been saying it for months now. Anyone who thought Haymon's PBC move would hurt HBO is just wrong. HBO has had nothing but strong ratings since PBC. HBO is still the king in Boxing. Meanwhile Showtime is the one that is getting hurt by Haymon's power move with PBC because all those fighters who last year fought on Showtime are now fighting on Network TV. HBO cut Haymon off years ago and has seen no dip in ratings and they aren't losing millions each show like Haymon is on PBC. Chavez was a major flop in the ring and with the ratings for Showtime.

Not sure why HBO and Showtime would go head to head like this. If you're gonna do the same date could you possibly make it so the channels don't show events at the same time? Have one channel start at 8pm and the other at 10pm.

If they were smart they'd agree to things like this in the future. Everyone wins.

            LOL @ ShowTime.

Chavez got over $4mill for this result? not only that he got his culo beat and QUIT.

Haymon is winning! ShowTime are the real losers!

It's no surprise with greed as the motto of how Haymon conducts his business with the fighters and fights it's just a matter of time. Floyd is the exception to the rule. Once Floyd falls on 5-2, it's going to be a domino effect.

HBO had the date first and the better card. It was Showtime and Haymon who decided to go head to head after the HBO fight was already know. They even blocked the venu. HBO and Golden Boy had the Stub Hub for the Matthysee fight but Haymon used his power behind the scenes to steal it which is why it got changed to NY. But it was a foolish move by Haymon that backfired. Chavez embarrassed and a damn riot after the fight with people throwing things like beers into the ring at Chavez after he quit and the ratings were awful.
