Duva seems smart enough that she could have thought of that possibility, given the money Haymon's group is throwing around.
So....maybe it was a power play on Duva's part with the HBO negotiations.
I could see the possibility of them having discussions with HBO previously where HBO wasn't thrilled with giving Kovalev an out to possibly fight Stevenson outside of HBO.
By making Kovalev the mandatory, Duva can go back to HBO and say "look, we want Kovalev on HBO long-term, it's good for HBO and it's good for Main Events....but the Kovalev-Stevenson is happening...you can either put up the money for it or let him fight Stevenson outside HBO".
The ball seems to be in HBO's court.
Neither side has all that many options, there aren't many places to get tv money outside HBO, and Kovalev fights frequently and does good ratings.
It seems to me HBO has to just suck it up and let Kovalev fight Stevenson off their network, if it comes to that.
