Comments Thread For: Smith: If Anyone Can Stand Up To Golovkin - It's Murray

Adam Smith, head of boxing at Sky Sports, gave his thoughts on the upcoming middleweight fight between IBO/WBA/WBC-interim champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs) and Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12KOs). The HBO televised fight is taking place on February 21st at Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Smith believes Murray is big enough, and strong enough, to give Golovkin a very good test in the ring and likely a much tougher fight than many people expect. Murray gave former WBC champion Sergio Martinez a very bruising fight in 2013. Martinez barely escaped with a win suffered multiple injuries in the contest. Murray also fought to a controversial draw with former champion Felix Sturm.

So what happens if golovkin steamrolls Murray? Does Murray suddenly become just another bum,or will GGG actually get credit for it?

Murray is no bum. Anyone who calls him that is either an easy mouth b*tch or simply dksab. Kid can fight.

i was thinking/mostly hoping the same thing about this match but then someone made the interesting point on one of their comments on one of these articles on this fight, something to the effect that Murray got beat by a one legged Martinez.... which then had me thinking that Murray might not be as good as we thought after he had that close fight with Martinez in Argentina

Neither was Geale and look at what happened to him.

With his tight high guard and good straight shots, Murray could be a tough not to crack for GGG if he had the power to get GGG's respect. But he doesn't, so GGG will just walk through everything he throws, go to work on his body and stop him brutally in the middle rounds.

Murray lost the Sturm fight in reality, went life and death with Khomitsky (not a knock on him, but GGG manhandled Sergey early in his career), looked lathargic against the "black Roy Jones Jr" Tetteh, and has the type of style that won't work against GGG. Murray isn't lasting 3 rounds and there's no one at 160 that would be able to stand up to GGG without serious injury.

Murray is not Geale. Geale was already fighting scared and Murray won't fight like that.Murray is very underrated and I think beat Sergio. Murray has the power to get Golovkins respect. This fight is Golovkins toughest to date and it could show where Golovkin really is.

Murray is definitely not a bum and arguably an undefeated fighter. It's a very good fight.
