Comments Thread For: Photos: Kovalev Drops, Beats Hopkins Monster Gallery

Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City - Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23KOs) was forced to go the twelve round distance for the first time in his career, but he had more than enough firepower to dominate the 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32KOs) to win a lopsided unanimous decision to unify the WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight titles. The scores were 120-107, 120-107 and 120-106.

Kovalev started strong, applying pressure in the first and scoring a knockdown with a short counter on Hopkins. Following that round, Hopkins was mostly on the defensive and landing one punch at a time here and there, while Kovalev dominated the action with activity, hard punches and combinations.

Maybe the 'educated boxing commentators on these sites will start looking at the reality of the sport. It was an easy pick in Kovalev to those that know boxing.

Perhaps giving GGG the respect he deserves will start to right the wrongs that have been posted, not based on knowledge but based on prejudice.

I am certain Krusher wont get the respect he's due because Hopkins is too old, and that will come from the same people that picked Hopkins to beat a "one dimensional fighter who has never gone past 8 rounds. " Go Krusher!!

i'd favour a prime middleweight hopkins to stop kovalev, should he moved up to lightheavyweight comfortably in those young and strong years

Hopkins' style just had nothing for Kovalev. I don't see how having a little extra stamina a few years ago would make much of any difference.

Exactly, only guy to take Kova past 8 was this old man. 10 years ago, Hopkins serves this neanderthal up on a platter. Really though, Kova's reach and power were just a bit too much for Hopkins to overcome. I think if he packed just a little less punch, then this fight would have been very different but once he caught Hopkins on the top of the head in the first, Hopkins didn't want to engage. Nothing Hopkins could do about the power aspect but Kova looks to be the real deal, not just a power puncher but a pretty decent boxer as well.

If Stevenson won't fight Kovalev, then Kova should press for a fight with Ward, Braehmer, or a catchweight fight with Huck.

It was a lose lose fight for Kovalev. If he had lost it would have been dismal and by winning he only beat a 50yr old middle weight man.

Having said that Kovalev is an excellent boxer and big at that weight too. If someone can land shots Kovalev is beatable but that's easier said than done. I would love to see Stevenson who is a small guy fighting him and the fight will be good while it lasts because it wont go the distance. I really like Kovalev, he's a great guy and great fighter.

the main thing was kovalev's control of distance i.e his footwork

hopkins style is to button down his chin and rush into his opponent with a punch(sometimes includes a headbutt) with the intention of landing in a clinch so as to smother a counter, hopkins since about 40 yrs of age, can barely handle guys that have the feet to retreat these rushes which just leave him out in the open and able to be countered, although what you get is still nothing great as the guy fights with his head down, but you still land, and he mostly does not

only reason i'd pick a young hopkins(and im thinking a middleweight one, althought the one that fought tarver could possibly have pulled it out i dont remember much of a younger hopkins at lightheavy) is hopkins chin, and he had good power, i think he would rush kovalev and stop him as im just not confident in sergei's chin

                  That's what I call a "boxing savvy"...
... I'm also sure that SRR would have KOd Kovalev as well.
