If Cotto/Canelo and Mayweather/TBA(not pac) fight on the same night..

...who will it hurt more in terms of numbers? I usually don't care about numbers but here is a little perspective on what Canelo and Oscar are trying to do. First of all, i think they really don't care if Mayweather is fighting on the same date. People are saying it's ****** going up against mayweather and their numbers are going to take a hit but is it really? Let's be honest here, Canelo and Cotto's demographic(Mexicans and Puerto Ricans) are going to buy that fight instead of Mayweather. Do you think the casual fan will actually buy the Cotto/Canelo fight if it was on another date? I highly doubt it because they really dont know who they are so I don't think they care about casuals. That's a no brainer and I think that's all they need to have in terms of having a successful PPV because neither Cotto or Canelo will get 30 million for one fight to start with and Mexicans and Puerto Ricans love their boxing. The Cotto/Canelo fight might do a million buys which would be great for them but will Mayweather take a bigger hit? I hope we see the same cards on the same night because it will show if Mayweather fighting Hispanics on their holidays will contribute to his high PPV numbers but how much does it impact it will be the main question!?

Good post. I love topics about boxing numbers.

At the risk of him running and hugging again, I would still rather watch Mayweather vs Anybody instead of Cotto vs Canelo. But, that doesn't mean anything because Mayweather has cleverly marketed himself to the Mexican fan base.

Wearing the colors of the Mexican flag, fighting on Mexican holidays. Mayweather has done an excellent job of marketing himself to Mexican boxing fans both hardcore and casual. However, I do think when the time comes, Mayweather will produce lower numbers than a Canelo fight on a Mexican holiday.

if both fights happen on the same day, neither card will do a million buys. cotto just fought Martinez and did 300k. canelo just fought lara and did the same numbers. so those guys cant even get half a million buys on their own date. so don't expect them too get a million buys going head too head with another ppv card. everyone loses if hbo and showtime do a card on the same night. arum, oscar, hbo, showtime. the only winner would be Floyd, and that's only because he gets a 32 million dollar guarantee.

From all angles, I don't see how anyone would pick Mayweather vs (Not named Pacquiao) over that, I really don't.

I don't care about the actual numbers, I just know that I'd rather spend my money on Canelo vs Cotto. Floyd can fight Khan, Garcia, Brook, Thurman, etc. Only fighter that I care to see him in the ring against at this point is Manny. If Floyd fights someone else I'll still watch it... Online Sunday morning.

when you put two ppv draws fighting each other 1+1=4, remember canelo(350k) fighting floyd(750k)? when two draws fight each other the fight itself will generate interest among boxing fans in general and not just the fighters fanbases...

ask yourself this question-who do you think casual fans (ie white, middle class Americans)would choose? there's your answer. Ethnic or minority groups do not drive ppv sales any more than they do music, movies etc.

Mayweather gets these dates because he has proven to be a ticket seller and these are dates where there usually isn't much competing sports programming on after 8:00PM.

cotto is a box office draw, not a ppv draw, meaning he sells tickets not ppvs. cotto had 2 fights go over a million. those were his fights with mayweather and pacquiao. canelo isn't either one of those guys in terms of popularity in the US. now couple that with another ppv card going on the same night. 700k buys max. it's a lose/lose for Oscar, arum, hbo and showtime. it's a reason why there has never been 2 ppv's on the same night. it's not good for business. cotto/canelo is better served by having a date too themselves and they most likely will

                  Canelo isn't worth PPV

I think any company, especially one that wants to be successful, would opt not to have their PPV compete with another PPV. It doesn't make sense financially. The goal is to maximize profits. I think it's a silly idea to say at least we won't take as big of a hit as our competitor. It would make more sense to say what date can we choose to maximize our profits. That's why it's important for Oscar/Canelo to announce the May fight first. Nobody is trying to lose less than the other guy. They're trying to make as much money as possible.
