    Comments Thread For: Officials Names For Kovalev-Agnew 175 Lb. Title Fight

    Sergey Kovalev heads to Atlantic City for the first time in his career, facing unbeaten but unheralded challenger Cedric Agnew this weekend in a light heavyweight title fight.

    Veteran referee Samuel Viruet – a regular official on the New York/New Jersey boxing scene – has been tabbed to officiate the scheduled 12-round affair, which headlines live on HBO.

    The event marks the first time that Viruet has ever officiated a fight featuring Kovalev or Agnew. The 67-year old official has served in more than two dozen major title fights, including a mercy stoppage of badly battered Giovani Segura at the hands of Brian Viloria in Dec. ’11.

    Earlier that year – and in his last high-profile fight officiated in Atlantic City, Viruet was the only official to avoid the guillotine following Paul Williams’ highly controversial majority decision win over Erislandy Lara. Ringside judges Donald Givens, Harold Whitaker III and Al Bennett were handed an indefinite suspension for what was classified as subpar work turned in for the HBO-televised contest.
