It's the dominance he has with his 'seek and destroy' style that's so exciting to viewers. He brings with him a high probably of an action-packed fight that will most likely end in a stoppage. On top of that, he's endearing and humble himself (guys who don't like him will hang on every word his handlers say but forget that he himself is actually a humble man). Boxing fans and the common man alike can all see the appeal of a GGG fight.
Ward caters to the boxing purists, which are far fewer in between. He's got a sort of bland personality and doesn't have such an exciting style, more 'veteran tactics' aka excessive holding.
It's like comparing Megan Fox to Cate Blanchet. Yea, Cate is the better actress but who puts butts in the theatres?
