In retrospect, how does Cortez let Marquez-Pac 1 continue, but stop Ishida-Kirkland?

OK, here me out. I know I'm probably the minority here because everyone seems to hate Kirkland, but in retrospect, Marquez was in much worse condition after being dropped by Pac for the third time then Kirk was against Ishida

For argument sake, I feel like Cortez should've let the fight go on.. That's just me

The most interesting part about Marquez is that he reacted in a way that could have easily been interpreted as not wanting to continue, this was when he was on the canvas after the 3rd KD but Marquez was still very much conscious of his surrounding and the situation. Gonna re-watch the Kirkland fight again, he looked out of it from what I remember.

Knockdowns were identical if not worse for Marquez

He might just have got lucky with JMM. Maybe the fact that Manny landed a punch after Marquez had gone down (and was hanging onto the ropes) would have stirred up controversy in the event of an immediate stoppage, and giving Marquez the chance to get up gave him an out.

On the the other hand, JMM's eyes might have been clear enough to convince him he wasn't that badly hurt. Either way, Cortez became increasingly incompetent over the course of the previous decade and should have been out out to pasture a hell of a lot sooner.

Yeah doesn't look like it was that good a stoppage but I reckon Kirkland would have got taken out eventually. Ishida is a lot better than I gave him credit for, he troubled Pirog if most remember correctly. What he possessed was a really good straight right hand and it would have always landed on Kirkland as Kirkland squares up and doesn't move his head.

The difference is Kirkland kept getting dropped and hurt by a featherfisted journeyman in Ishida so Cortez must have felt that there was something seriously wrong with Kirkland. In the Marquez/Pac fight Cortez expected that type of thing since it was a worldclass fight and Pac is a beast.

Troubled him in the sense he lost every single round?

Not that you're wrong, but by that logic surely it's more dangerous to let a hurt guy take shots from Manny Pacquiao than Nobuhiro Ishida.
