    Comments Thread For: Bernstein Feels Canelo is Wise To Study Mayweather-Cotto

    If you are ever looking for a fair, objective opinion on anything related to the sport of boxing, Showtime analyst Al Bernstein will likely fill your void.

    In a few weeks’ time, Bernstein will find himself sitting ringside inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez faces off with Floyd Mayweather, the man widely regarded as the sport’s premier fighter.

    The opinions on Mayweather-Alvarez have been hot and heavy, with the general consensus being that Floyd’s experience and vast array of skills will be a little too much for his 23-year old foe.

    When assessing the matchup, Bernstein actually foresees a difficult task on both sides of the fence.

    Bernstein is right. The blueprint is right there and if Cotto didnt gas after the 9th round he would have probably beaten Mayweather. Forget Castillo and De La Hoya fights the blueprint for beating Maywether is in the Cotto fight.

      Canelo training consist of kangaroo meat and watching Jenny Craig video all day, he doesn't even have time to watch and study videos of Floyd.

        Bernstein > Lampley and Merchant. The guy knows how to breakdown a fight without throwing temper tantrums.

          That's a reasonable assessment of what Canelo needs to do, but I think most of the fight will take place in the center of the ring.

            You're crazier than hell. Cotto was never close to winning that fight. Lost 9-3 at best.

              I think you're right. Canelo isn't a mauler. He's more of a boxer-puncher.

                Agreed. Most of the HBO guys are biased and are always trying to build up boxers who fight on their network. Although I do like hearing Roy and Wards fighter point of view.

                  Yes, Floyd is a naturally gifted athlete, but Floyd is not "freak of nature." Floyd, at 36, is in the shape he's in because:
                  • He takes training seriously.
                  • He fights at his natural weight.
                  • He uses intelligence and skill to win fights without taking unnecessary punishment.


                  If more fighters did these things, you'd see more fighters fighting competitively into their late 30s and for some, beyond.

                    Yea, if more fighters were like Floyd, they would be ....more like floyd.
