Comments Thread For: Ponce De Leon vs. Velez Considered For Fall Showdown

A match-up between Daniel Ponce De Leon and Jayson is likely to take place later this year, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told krikya360.com Tuesday afternoon.

The bout was originally to have taken place at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY, but Velez backed out of the fight due to suffering an ankle injury.

Ponce De Leon would up fighting Abner Mares on May 4th in Las Vegas, NV. During the highly-anticipated fight between the two Mexican fighters, Mares dropped Ponce De Leon twice en route to a ninth round stoppage victory.

Interested in seeing how good Velez is or isn't so this seems to be the best measuring stick to determine.

This fight made more sense when Ponce was still champion because it was a huge risk for Vélez but there was a big reward. Now it's all risk and little reward. It still is an interesting fight for the fan but, for Vélez, it might not be the best possible option .

The lack of opponents makes it tougher to make fights at 126. Might as well fight Ponce with or without a belt.

This is a better fight competition wise because Abner would have got Velez more money but Velez isn't ready for a Mares clash.

I hope this fight isn't in N.Y. Ponce will get robbed by the judges.
Just look at every Mexican boxer who has fought in N.Y. Nothing but b.s robberies.

I understand but should have done it when he had the chance for the title. That way if he lost, well, he lost to a world champion. Now, if he loses some will say that he lost to a beltless brawler coming of a loss, and Vélez would be deemed a hypejob/fraud. That's what I mean by huge risk/little reward.

By the way, I think Ponce should win this one.
