While we would all of course like to see a blood and guts warrior mentality in boxers, it is an exception not the norm. That's why Abraham and Ali received the admiration they deserved when they overcame physical and mental barriers, but can't expect all fighters to be like that. That's why heart is a category all its own in a fighter's skill-set. Some have more of it than others, and that's what makes some more loved even if they lack something else in the technical department.
I am not going to fault Ortiz for choosing not to continue. It leaves a bad taste in a fan's mouth, especially with his prior history, but I can't fault him too much for it.
