atlas and povetkin may be about to split because of teddy's job with espn

By James Slater: Just when it seemed the partnership that is (or was) Alexander Povetkin and Teddy Atlas was going well, it seems the pair may be on the brink of a split. So writes top scribe Ron Borges of The Sweet Science.

Ahead of his upcoming fight with former cruiserweight champ Marco Huck, “Regular?WBA heavyweight champ Povetkin has apparently refused to come to the U.S to train. Atlas, as he explained to Borges, has always said he has to put his duties at ESPN first and cannot leave for Russia when the network needs him. With the new season of “Friday Night Fights?now in full swing, Atlas cannot leave - as he explained to Borges:

“ESPN is my main job,?Atlas said. “I have an obligation to ESPN that I have to fulfil. Povetkin has an obligation to fulfil too but I’m being told he doesn’t want to come to the U.S. Who knows what they’re telling him? All I know is I can’t go to Russia. ESPN is how I feed my family. Vlad [Khrunov; Povetkin’s manager] knows that. The fighter knows that. This kind of stuff is why I stopped training fighters.?br />
So, unless Povetkin changes his mind and agrees to come to America to train (as per the agreement Atlas says he and his fighter had - when T.V work is set, Teddy cannot go to Russia, Povetkin comes to him) the unbeaten 32-year-old will have to get ready for Huck (and maybe all his future fights) without the assistance of the man who has guided him so well thus far (two-and-half years).

Ahead of any big fight it is a bad time for a fighter to split from a long-time trainer, and it must be remembered that it was Atlas who inspired Povetkin to dig deep enough to pull out a points win over Ruslan Chagaev last summer; his biggest win to date. Without Atlas?motivational skills in the corner on Feb. 25th maybe “Sasha?will be at a disadvantage.

Khrunov, according to Borges?article, is still telling the media that Atlas is expected to arrive in Moscow in the coming days. Atlas, as he has made more than clear, will not be leaving the U.S. The question is: can Povetkin continue his successful run without Teddy?

This report is not noteworthy in any way. But I see that the "old faithful" moan about "this is how I feed my family" or the other "I have to put food on the table" etc.

Coming from guys who have to be worth many 10's of millions, at least, a guy like Atlas, who uses these words frequently, he's had a well paying position with ESPN for many years, paying hm a large wage, and involved from time to time in many other well paying gigs, like movies, TV secials etc.

Sickening.....For a guy with such a loose flowing mouth who had only 9 amateur fights losing 4, and no pro experience, except a few months with Cus D'Amato carrying buckets etc. As we all know D'Amato fired him from his unpaid job for threatenig 15 yr old Tyson with a gun. Not a pleasant fellow........

I'm not trying to come off as rude, but I think you are entirely wrong with your position on this. For starters, there is no guarantee at all that Teddy is worth 10's of millions of dollars. Like you said, he is not considered anywhere close to an elite trainer, and his only regular job is hosting FNF, a series that although popular, isn't rated extremely high on the ESPN network broadcasts and probably doesn't garner the type of contracts that you are imagining. Most professional athletes don't have 10's of millions of dollars, so assuming that a full-time broadcaster and part-time fight trainer does is almost absurd. The money aspect is all about saving and investing, if he has been smart with his money he may be well off, but saying he is a multimillionaire is comical.

Even more comical is your attack of Atlas' character. Teddy Atlas is highly respected in the boxing world by fans, trainers, and fighters alike, he is a yearly donor to many foundations, and although he did have issues in his past, you are mentioning a specific incident from the beginning of his career, which makes me think you have a personal vendetta rather than a valid argument.

Without Atlas, Povetkin would have 1) went up against Klitschko at his first offered opportunity, a fight that would have likely been a loss for Povetkin and would have earned him much less money than what he will be able to negotiate for a fight with a Klitschko brother now, and 2) would have likely lost his title fight against Chagaev, because he only seemed to come on strongly once Teddy gave him his memorable speech in the corner in the later rounds of the bout. Teddy Atlas has been more than generous with his treatment of Povetkin, even leaving the FNF crew a month early last season to help Povetkin train in Russia. A deal is a deal, and if they agreed Povetkin should train in the U.S. during the FNF season, then that is how it should be.

I commend Atlas for staying loyal to his fans and ESPN, he has his priorities in order and that is something difficult to find these days. If Povetkin wants to continue his success, he should think twice before splitting from the trainer who helped him from the brink of defeat less than a year ago!

Great to hear, maybe Povetkin will start fighting good again. I think it's safe to say that Povetkin has regressed under Teddy. Watch his recent fights and compare them to prior his teaming up with Teddy and tell me he looks like a better fighter. Nope, no way.

Maybe it was a smart move not fighting Klitschko right away, but the man is not some young kid he's 32 years old. He's not going to beat Klitschko the way he's fighting now, so he probably would have had a better shot back then.

Povetkin was regressing before teaming up with Atlas. Didnt look impressive in the Byrd and Chambers fight.
