The current best vs the best from twenty years ago

How would the top fighters of 1991 do in today's current scene.

Would they be champions or are today's fighter better.

    Heavyweight

    Evander Holyfield
    Mike Tyson

How would they do against the Wlad and Vitali?

    Cruiserweight

    Orlin Norris
    Anaclet Wamba

Could they get the better of the like of Tarver, Cunningham, Huck and Lebedev

    Light-Heavyweight

    Virgil Hill
    Charles Williams

Hopkins was fighter when these guys were around but today he the Kingpin of the light-heavy division. Would Williams and Virgil get the better of Hopkins, Pascal and Dawson?

    Super-Middleweight

    Nigel Benn
    Chris Eubank

How would these two bitter rivals do against the the Super 6 finalist or Bute?

    Middleweight

    James Toney
    Mike McCallum

Would the Bodysnatcher and Toney pre-Burger King cause Sergio some serrious problems

    Light-Middleweight

    Terry Norris

Would Cotto and the rest of today's light middles trouble Norris?

    Welterweight

    Meldrick Taylor
    James McGirt

Could these two match the best fighter of today, Manny Pacquiao?

    Light-Welterweight

    Julio Cesar Chavez

How would Khan and Bradley deal with this ATG

    Lightweight

    Pernell Whitaker

What a fight it could be with Marquez, would Rios or Guerrero prove any challenge for Sweetpea

    Super-Featherweight

    Azumah Nelson

Does anyone give Burns, Fana and Broner a chance here?

    Featherweight

    Manuel Medina
    Paul Hodkinson

Gamboa, Lopez, Garcia and Salido, quite a talent packed division at the moment. How do Medina and Hodkinson do?

    Super-Bantamweight

    Welcome Ncita

Would you bet against Nishioka, Montiel, Kratingdaenggym, or even Marquez and Rigondeaux?

    Bantamweight

    Orlando Canizales

Could Canizales, make an impact in the most talented packed division in boxing today? Could he beat any of the bantam tourney participants let alone Donaire?

    Super-Flyweight

    Khaosai Galaxy

Could any of today's super-flys beat this HOF?

    Flyweight

    Dave McAuley

He beat the Duke, but can he beat Segura & Wonjongkam?

So how do you have it?

    1991 Take:

    Heayweight
    Middleweight
    Light-Middelweight
    Light-Welterweight
    Lightweight
    Super-Featherweight

    Cruiserweight
    Light-Heavyweight
    Welterweight
    Featherweight
    Super-Bantamweight
    Bantamweight
    Flyweight

    Can't decide on Supermiddle

    7-7 then

    How do you have it.

This is a really good thread. probably worth posting on the boxing history forum.

I think the modern super-middleweights would probably win. I don't think either benn or eubank could really deal with ward and it's an open question as to how susceptable bute still is to pressure and fatigue over 12 rounds.

People will probably disagree with this but I would take the modern heavyweights as well. Tyson is a favourate against wlad but I think vitali gives both of the older fighters big problems. Tyson should win the early rounds against vitali but go the twelve rounds and win?

Also, even though i prefer holyfield to tyson (and think he'd beat mike every day of the week) he has more trouble with the klitschko's than tyson does I feel.

Prince charles williams loses to bernard hopkins probably. From the little i've seen of him I think he relies on his opponent not being able to fully defend themselves on the inside (like tyson). though that's largely supposition. Hopkins is old now and could get outworked but I don't think that's the most likely scenario, the calzaghe fight might be a red herring. He could give dawson trouble despite the seemingly massive gulf in ability. Pascal is very much an underdog.

Toney and McCallum are immense, their first fight together is one of my favourates. I don't like to pick against martinez as he's one of my favourate fighters but I'll have to go with 1991. I think if he's smart he'll be able to rob toney without really engaging him as toney has some difficulty with movers, he's not going to chase you down. But I don't see martinez's power really coming into play, he'll have to go 12 rounds and take breaks. Also, it's 2 vs. 1.

Big names like nelson and whitaker take it for their era. Overall I'm not sure, some of the potential matchups are drawing a blank for me.

    edit:

chavez beats bradley, for all his good head movement I don't see chavez doing a whitaker. though that's probably elementary.

Thanks for the feedback and your thoughts. I think both "classes" are evenly matched.

Will take your advice and post it in the history forum.
