To be honest, I always like Steve Albert. I wish they'd bring him back full time.

        I honestly didn't know that.

I watch NCAA Basketball once in a blue moon, and I've never heard him call a game before.

He's getting better. He had a lot more trouble early. I like him now.

He's perfect for mixed martial arts commentating where they explode and cut each other off every 5 seconds whenever a guy lands a haymaker. His lack of boxing knowledge comes through every-time he opens his mouth. I know he's supposed to be more of the play by play guy, but even at that he isn't right for boxing. I'm no man to knock somebody's hustle but this guy has other options as does Showtime. They can have the guys from Shobox come over, or maybe get Jim Brown in there. He works for Showtime now, and I've heard him call fights in the past, and he does a really good job commentating boxing;much better than Johnson. I'm just venting, what are your thoughts?
dude!! gus johnson is by far the best commentator out there... would u rather have jim nantz or troy aikman or bryant gumbel... anytime gus johnson is doing any type of sporting event I tune it.... he brings so much excitement!

It was obvious he had no idea what he was talking about when I first heard him call a fight between Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch. Sometime around near the end of the 9th or 10th round, when it was obvious to anyone who understands the sport of boxing that Jermain Taylor was running out of gas and hoping to make it to the final bell, Gus starts this spiel about how people were concerned Taylor might run out of gas. Gus then decided it was his role to dispel those concerns about Jermain Taylor, because, as Gus said it, "Jermain has a lot of gas in the tank tonight, folks. A LOT OF GAS LEFT IN THE TANK!!!!"

I remember thinking Jermain was running on fumes and would need to try to keep away from Froch if he wanted to get the decision win, that Jermain was a wilting flower who might not escape the fight in a semi-conscious state RIGHT BEFORE Gus siad that bull**** about Taylor having a lot left. There was also a point during Froch vs Dirrell, a fight I believe Dirrell boxed well in, but during a round where Dirrell was clearly losing and having a tough time keeping Froch off him. The round ended and Froch was pretty clearly the winner, and Gus jumps on the mic saying Dirrell clearly dominated that round. Al Bernstein chimed in with a skeptical "Really??" And Gus replied "OH YEAH!!!!!"

Then last Saturday night, when it was time to hype the Abraham vs Dirrell fight, Gus decided this was the right way to hype that fight.

"Speaking of impeccable boxing skills, you'll get to see Andre Dirrell in action on ......" and didn't even really acknowledge Arthur Abraham at all. Like it was just an Andre Dirrell showcase fight or something. I think it's getting pretty obvious if you have a slick, black fighter in there against anyone other than a slick, black boxer, you know damn well who he's going to root for.

I don't think it's his fault he's been giving a job he doesn't deserve and knows nothing about. That was Showtime's horrible decision to give a guy who knows nothing about boxing a job as a boxing commentator. But what IS Gus' fault is that fact he doesn't let his inability to grasp the sport of boxing stop him from running off at the mouth as if he does know. He's got Al Berenstein sitting right next to him, a guy who probably has more boxing knowledge than any 10 people Gus has ever sat next to, and Gus still won't know his role, shut the hell up, and let the guy who know's what he's talking about do without being interrupted.
