Can we stop saying "fighter X doesn't have the power to keep fighter Y off him"?

This makes no sense. Hasn't it been proven throughout boxing history that what you need to keep a fighter off you is a good jab, good footwork, smart defense, and ring generalship? Winky has no power and kept Tito off him all night with a jab, Floyd is not a powerful puncher and even when he fights in the pocket guys don't get to him, and Ali also was not powerful, yet no one could get to him in his prime.

      Yes and no....

First off, Winky is a stronger fighter physically than Tito and much more skilled. So yes he kept him off with a great jab and great defense.

Second, Floyd was a power puncher but when he moved up in weight, that power didn't carry over. While Floyd may not be Tyson with his hands, he definitely isn't a feather fisted fighter. Also Floyd has great defense in or out of the pocket.

As far as Ali not being powerful, why don't you ask George Foreman who has a granite chin how hard Ali punches.

        1. Are you implying that fighter x always keeps fighter y off of him. The boxer always beats the puncher?

        2. No (to the Ali comment)

Not at all. All I'm saying is that you don't need huge power to keep someone off you.

Meldrick Taylor, Whitaker, Willie Pep, Nicolino Locche have proven you don't need power to keep a strong guy off you.

Ali wasn't that hard of a puncher but he could punch none the less. Foreman gave it his all and I remember seeing a video on Foreman responding to Ali, When Ali had asked him, "Foreman is that all you got?!" and Foreman said, "Yes" in that interview. Foreman was pretty much done, Ali knew he had him.

being physically strong and having power is two different things imo...
