Staphylococcus is a group of bacteria that can cause a multitude of diseases as a result of infection of various tissues of the body. Staphylococcus is more familiarly known as Staph (pronounced "staff"). Staph-related illness can range from mild and requiring no treatment to severe and potentially fatal.

The name "Staphylococcus" comes from the Greek staphyle, meaning a bunch of g****s, and kokkos, meaning berry, and that is what Staph look like under the microscope, like a bunch of g****s or little round berries. (In technical terms, these are gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, usually unencapsulated cocci.)

Over 30 different types of Staphylococci can infect humans, but most infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci can be found normally in the nose and on the skin (and less commonly in other locations) of 20%-30% of healthy adults. In the majority of cases, the bacteria do not cause disease. However, damage to the skin or other injury may allow the bacteria to overcome the natural protective mechanisms of the body, leading to infection.

Who is at risk for Staph infections?

Anyone can develop a Staph infection, although certain groups of people are at greater risk, including newborn infants, breastfeeding women, and people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, and lung disease. Injecting drug users, those with skin injuries or disorders, intravenous catheters, surgical incisions, and those with a weakened immune system all have an increased risk of developing Staph infections.

What are the symptoms and signs of a Staph infection?

Staphylococcal disease of the skin usually results in a localized collection of pus, known as an abscess, boil, or furuncle. The affected area may be red, swollen, and painful. Drainage or pus is common.

MERSA is a ***** and it is a real medical problem that has ended more then a few NFL careers. I hope Pavlik will be ok but his team has made him look like an anus because they did not take staph seriously.

I said from day one that staph was brought up that Kelly could have problem with it for a long while. I was hoping it was not the anti-biotic resistent strain but obviously it is MERSA, that or his Dr. knows absolutely nothing.

Do you think Lou wants to risk Paul's career on a "maybe"? If Team Pavlik had just been honest from Day One, then Paul could have moved on.

We are so tight with dates and opponents this winter, that you can't be operating on improbabilities.

...and even if Paul KO'd a drunk Pavlik, you guys would have a bunch of "hand excuses".
Or maybe they hoped the infection would go away. I guess it didn't. Staph infections are very tricky and can potentially lead to amputation.

        I feel sorry for Pavlik.

Co ***n sign. I've been saying this or the longest. Pavlik and his team are like a bunch of rookies! Why won't they just keep pavlik out if training camps until it heals and stop disappointing his fans and boxig fans in general????

Pwill needs to fight one of the serg's before we forget the jmw even exists.

Staph infections are a very serious issue in locker rooms, gyms, hospitals and schools. I would never wish that **** on anyone I hope Kelly will be alright and able to fight in the future but his health is way mroe important than any fight no matter how much I was looking forward to it.

Bat, it hasn't gone away in how long? They need to stop stringing everyone along.

That is true, Goosen probably has grounds for a case against the Dr. who basically said Pavlik was ok. A Dr. should know about the whole anti-biotic resistent strain of staph and would be more cautious, although from what I know it appears to get better then comes back worse each time, and if not taken care of properly it is deadly serious.

People not taking staph seriously is one of the main issues, Kelly and his team obviously thought oh this is just staph it is nothing which is why we are at this point.
