Comments Thread For: Emailing world titles 'a bad look for the sport'

The powers that be in boxing's sanctioning bodies understand all that it takes for a fighter to work their way up to become a world champion. So why do they continue reducing the accomplishment by awarding world titles by email in a news release?

They need to do things like back in past and just send it through the mail.

What I don’t understand is why does everyone believe that this is new though? It’s not. It’s precedented.

The WBC made Heavyweight contender Ken Norton their first ever E-mail champion 46 years ago after stripping Leon Spinks of his WBC title.

Spinks refused to fight Norton; His mandatory challenger after he opted to give Muhammad Ali a rematch instead.
That was several years before e-mails were ever invented.

If a boxer has vacated the weight class, the fighter with the secondary belt should fight the next highest ranked opponent for the vacant title. Let them earn it in the ring.

At least in this scenario there is an event to crown a new champion, it becomes exciting!
I can’t imagine how anticlimactic it would be to be gifted a title when you haven’t fought for and won it.

Getting named a “champion” via email does no one any favours.

Better yet, put a 4 man tournament together with the top 4 contenders and let a new champion be decided that way!

Of course nothing is easy to put together when you have different belt issuing organsations having partnerships with specific promotors and what is frankly a huge amount of corruption, such as paying money for rankings etc.
This would at least give the newly crowned champion legitimacy, credibility and build their popularity.

Just because something was done before, it doesn't mean it is right.

Also, email was invented in 1971, 7 years before Ali-Spinks 2.

            YKSAB.

One one side, they get to be rich.
On the other, people know the're not for real.

Is dignity still a thing? Or is it just money nowadays?

I am not saying that it is. Titleholders should just start fighting their mandatories that’s all. Which is the only remedy to this e-mail champion problem.

E-mail were invented in 1971 right? Didn’t I just tell you that Ken Norton had become the WBC’s first e-mail champion 46 years ago back in 1978?

You only confirmed my original point with your fact checking.

                1978 > 1971

I agree with you on the 1st point.
