Comments Thread For: The long goodbye: Former rivals Fonfara and Chavez hit six-rounder circuit

The date was April 18, 2015. Nine months shy of a full decade ago. That was the night Andrzej "Andrew" Fonfara, aged 27, stopped Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, aged 29, in the ninth round of a light-heavyweight bout atop a Showtime card at what was then called the StubHub Center in Carson, California

Boxing is the one sport when you can compete long after you should. Money, ego, and broken dreams all play a part. It is sad that these guys can't save themselves from themselves. I for one will not be watching either of these two fights.

Boxing just might be the most depressing sport at certain times.

Only thing I remember from Chavez is that Ginger couldn't even sleep him @ 154 when he was drained like an Arizona pound ...

Fonfara had a nice section of fans at the venue, he as on fire the whole fight. Short Uppercut after short uppercut, Chavez's head snapping back over and over and over.

The tall and lanky Fonfora was so compact with his punches in that fight - the level of professionalism in contrast to Chavez JR was on display. Then Chavez finally takes one too many shots and tips over all at once and falls hard. .

The crowd turned on Chavez that night, I remember seeing tons of Chavez merch thrown on the ground, beers flying, loud booing, just a sour ending for everyone but that Fonfora section of fans. Fonfora made sure they had a night.

I think the Chavez fight was only made in case Perry fell out and Jake Paul needed a new opponent at the last minute......

I wasn't there but I watched it from home and thoroughly enjoyed Fonfara putting a beatdown on Junior. It was probably the best version of Andrej that I can recall...

That was the last great moment Fonfara would have in a boxing ring."

                    Untrue.

As a Brit I have to point out that while the record books may say that Badou Jack retired (the admittedly slightly overrated) Nathan Cleverly, really it was Fonfara & that fight was a great moment for him.

Despite my admission that Cleverly was slightly overrated, he was still better than Chavez Jr could ever have hoped to be.
