Bernard Hopkins has dismissed the importance of the coming weeks to the ambitions of Golden Boy Promotions. On Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Ryan Garcia - by some distance Golden Boy's highest-profile fighter - will challenge Devin Haney, the WBC super lightweight champion. He is the significant underdog against his long-term rival, and if, as expected, he loses - albeit against the highest caliber of opponents - he will have done so for the second time in three fights. Two weeks later, Jaime Munguia, Golden Boy's second-highest-profile fighter, will be the underdog when he challenges Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title in Las Vegas. Munguia remains undefeated but, like Garcia, in the event of defeat he would be confronted with having to rebuild.

Boxing has become a joke because of the cherry picking and "building prospects" process. They take guys who have some modicum of talent and who apparently will do everything they are told, and they bring the guy up on a bunch of cans, crappy fighters, awful comp....and go around touting the guy as the next big thing.

"The undefeated fighter is the only really good fighter" crap has utterly destroyed the sport. No one wants to watch guys "brought up" over years, fighting garbage fights in order to build their name, etc. Let good fighters fight good fighters. Let the best prove it in the ring. Stop focusing on the fighter being undefeated and start focusing on great matchups with good fighters.

Devin Haney is not some phenom who is one of the best in the sport. He is awful to watch and will likely beat Garcia in a boring UD. And no one will care.


I have never liked UFC. But the sport is ran alot more intelligently and it has surpassed the "divas" of boxing big time. Boxing is dying. Guys like Garcia who have built themselves into stars and don't need the sport but do it because they love boxing are badly needed. Haney wants to hug and feather fist his way into an undefeated career and tell everyone that they are just haters. He got a promoters gift when he lost to Loma and he beat terrible George, and then beat overated Progais.

All of boxing should be hoping Garcia stops Haney tonight. The sport needs knock outs, wars and blood and guts. Not running divas.

If you have been watching the buildup to this fight like the rest of us and your take is boxing needs more fighters like Ryan Garcia and less like Devin Haney then if you sir are looking for the problem in boxing then you need to look no further than the mirror. The past 6 weeks we have seen Ryan go through ******* withdrawls, shape shift into a storefront baptist preacher, pissy drunk off alcohol, claim to know where a child rapist island is but won't alert authorities, being an undisciplined potty mouth brat and disrespecting his trainer as well as the sport. Meanwhile Devin Haney has been a beacon of professionalism while single handily getting this fight across the finish line. If you have been watching this train wreck for the last month along side your ten year old son whom would you like him to emulate as a boxer? Ryan or Devin?
