My 90 Min convo with Dan Birmingham

So I am sitting on the plane in Biloxi waiting to fly back to ATL, and I see a guy coming up the aisle with a shotime hat on... and I'm like hmmmm... he comes up to me and he's like I think Im sitting next to you... so I get up, and I am like... hey, is your name Dan?.. He's like yeah... Im like oh wow.. you're one of my favorite trainers man.. hes like oh really, well thank you... then we sit down. I am like yeah, you and and Buddy McGirt are my favorite trainers, I think you guys give good instructions in the corner. Hes like Thanks!!!

Ill try to break down the different topics we talked about... a lot of this stuff isnt exactly in order of how the convo went, but im gonna keep it to each fight and each fighter... we jumped around alot.... I couldnt of possibly remember everything we discussed.. but I do remember all the fighters and topics and how the convos went and what we said.. im sure i left out about 25% of what we talked about, but this is all that I do remember

Dan: So you a boxing fan?
Me: Oh die hard, die hard boxing fan... I follow every inch of the sport.
Dan: Thats awesome.. people like you are few and far between.
Me: Yeah I truly love the sport, it's an addiction to me..

    Roy Jones-Jeff Lacy

Dan: So what did you think of the fight? Is Roy something else or what man?
Me: That was incredible... you know as a Roy fan for the last 5 years I am always nervous before a fight, I never know how Roy will show up or how he will look you know...
Dan: Oh this fight was all wrong for Jeff... he asked me to work his corner and I refused... he should of retired 3 fights ago..
Me: Really? you felt like this was an easy fight to pick? I felt like Roy SHOULD be able to beat him, but I thought Lacy would of came out quicker and more aggressive..
Dan: Well even if he did, how quick would he have looked against Roy?
Me: Well this 40 yr old Roy? I have no idea... the Joe fight was bad, and Sheika didnt prove too much for me... so I didnt know how to feel.. but.. you felt Lacy should of retired already?
Dan: Oh definitely... hes already starting to slur his words... we will be in the middle of a convo and he will lose complete train of thought... last night they were stitching him up in the dressing room and he spent 4 hours in the ER last night, doing cat scans and MRI's... they didnt want him to leave... That was a worse beating than Joe gave him..
Me: You think it was worse than Joe huh?
Dan: Definitely... see in the Joe fight, Lacy was getting hit a lot but it was never enough to hurt him, every round Lacy came back he would say his power is ****, he cant hurt me... it was just the volume of punches that made it look so bad... but with Roy... Roy was hurting him, he was hurting him bad... I was screaming at the corner from round 6 and on to stop the fight... Jeff was hurt.
Me: Yeah his eyes were damn near swollen shut, I was amazed actually... I hope for something like an 8-4 UD, not a 10 round whitewash TKO...
Dan: Yeah this fight was all wrong for him, thats why I refused to work the corner.... this morning, Ive never seen Jeff look as bad as he did, when he got to the airport this morning.. it took him an hour to figure out which air line he was even flying out of... he was clueless, didnt really know what was going on and his face was battered this morning.
Me: Wow... ok, he needs to retire then... you cant have your thoughts scrambled like that and continue to fight.
Dan: Exactly.. life is more prescious than a sport.

    Roy Jones:

Dan: So what did you think of Roy?
Me: Oh man! that was amazing! Ill be honest, whether it be him fighting a bum or tarver or Joe... I havent seen him do those things in 8 years... 8 left hooks in a row?
Dan: It was amazing... Roy is amazing... one of the greatest fighters Ive ever laid my eyes on... people need to appreciate Roy.. you will never see the things he does from another fighter... once he is gone, thats it.. hes gone, no more highlight reels like that..
Me: Thats exactly why Im here.
    Dan: Where you from?
    Me: Erie PA
Dan: Oh wow... you flew all the way here just for this fight?
Me: Definitely, I was here for Anthony Hanshaw fight too, and Trinidad last year...
Dan: You are a die hard fan then.
Me: Roy puts on a show, he makes you stand up and scream.. its always worth it for me, I had a blast, and this was the best performance Ive seen yet... THats why Im here though... soon he will be gone, and you wont be able to see him fight anymore, so I want to see it while I can.
Dan: Absolutely, Roy is something to behold... did you see that handspeed? Thats amazing, I couldnt believe how fast his hands were, even at 40, he can let off a 15 punch combo faster than anyone in the game... thats unique.
Me: My jaw dropped when that happened... I havent seen a combo like that since he was 30.
Dan: You know people think Roys broke... such absolute bull****... earlier this year me and Wink were at a fight, and Roy was there... Roy and Wink were standing next to each other bull****ting about money and investments and I was standing behind them and I heard Roy say that hes got 35 million in the bank, so hes just enjoying the spotlight while he can still do what he can do... Roys not broke, Roys not ******... hes actually incredibly intelligent, Ive talked to him so many times, hes a very smart person.
Me: Well thats great to hear, people always talk **** on him, like "Why is Roy still fighitng, he must be broke"
Dan: Roys not close to broke... are you kidding me? Did you hear the collisseum? Chanting his name... he still has it, and he still has the love... people still want to see him, they love to see him.. hell i love to see him.. thats why he is still here, because he is still loved, and he knows it.
Me: Absolutely... Im a fan until the end... hey do you think he could beat Jermaine Taylor..? just wonderin, being that Jermain just fought Lacy too..
Dan: Uhh... yeah... I do. Roys still got that speed.. and Jermain isnt going to pressure him too much, Roy could definitely beat Taylor.. He would outbox Taylor, he still has his skills.. even at this stage, those skills are still there, and he still has the energy to use them.

Me: So hows Wink man? Whats he doing? He gonna fight anytime soon?

    Winky Wright:

Dan: Winks just chillen right now man, he loves the lifestyle, the clubs and the ******** he loves it... he says hes going to fight again soon, but I really dont know.
Me: And im sure they love him back haha..
Dan: haha oh yeah, they sure do.
Me: That Paul Williams fight was a rough one.
Dan: Yeah definitely, the 2 year lay off didnt help.. but Paul Williams is just a better fighter at this stage, and he seems to keep getting better.
Me: Yeah a 6-3 southpaw who throws a 110 punches a round isnt the easiest task
    Dan: Definitely not.
Me: Plus with a fighter like wink.. a defensive fighter, fighting someone who throws so many punches, you find yourself always in defensive mode and can never get off.
Dan: Hey man, you do know what you're talkin about... thats exactly right, it was just a bad fight.
Me: What were you telling him in the corner against Williams?
Dan: You know, just to try and get off more, try to let that left hand go more and give Paul a reason to stop throwing so much... but you know, easier said than done... that fight was a white wash, Wink didnt win a round.
Me: Yeah, well... theres not too many fighters out there that are going to beat him right now anyway
    Dan: no, there certainly isnt

(Paul Williams to be discussed later)

Dan: You know whats ridiculous with Wink tho, that kid falls into money so easily... just last weekend he won 400 grand playing golf with a lawyer friend of his..
    Me: What are you serious?
Dan: Yeah, why cant that happen to me... These guys play golf and they bet on every hole, and then the overall winner...
Me: Sounds like this lawyer is pretty successful himself.
Dan: Oh he is, learjets and everything.
Me: So your not sure if Wink will fight again? Im trying to think of some fights he COULD take.
Dan: Well we tried to get Pavlik but they ended up going with Williams instead.
Me: yeah, I mean at 160 thats pretty much it (forgot to mention sturm).. at 154, Vernon is now gone which is terrible, Kirkland is locked up... what about Martinez?
Dan: Winky loses that fight... I know you are talking about, that Martinez kid can fight seriously, real slick, real fast... Winkys 38 man, thats too much at this stage...
Me: Really 38 huh, I knew he was getting up there but I didnt think he was 38 yet...
Dan: oh yeah... we ll just have to see, Im not sure what he "really" wants to do, he says he ll fight again, but I just dont know..
    Me: right right...

    Williams-Pavlik

Me: So how do you think Williams Pavlik is gonna go then?
Dan: Oh Williams wins that one, no questions asked..
Me: haha I actually said, the moment Pavlik signed that contract he just signed his championship away.
Dan: Your right, thats it... Williams is just another level type of fighter right now.. Pavlik is a good fighter, but Williams brings too many different things to the ring right now.
Me: Yeah, maybe Jack Loews one liner advice will help "Double the ****in jab kelly... Double the Jab"
Dan: hahahahaha, he does say that all the time doesnt he?! hahahha thats funny stuff... you know double the jab against a puncher isnt always the best idea because the 2nd jab isnt as strong..
Me: Right you dont get full extension on the second jab.
Dan: Thats right you know what your talkin about... you double jab a puncher too much, and they will take advantage of that and counter you.
Me: Yeah, you should at leats mix it up, keep the opponent guessing...
Dan: Right.. seems like thats what Jack is always saying though.. hahaha, that was pretty good.
Me: Yeah, I used to be a bigger fan of Pavlik before he started earning this money, his attiude has changed, he doesnt seem to be the same type of guy anymore.
Dan: Yeah, haha, not the typical ahhh, ahhh... youngstown native huh.
Me: no not at all, and another thing pissed me off is when he started talking **** on the SMW tournament.
Dan: Oh he did? I didnt know that.
ME: Yeah he made some derogatory comments like if those guys want to beat each other up for peanuts then let them. That pissed me off, thats whats wrong with boxing... the best guys dont fight the best guys, and thats what they are trying to help with this tournament. I love this tournament.
Dan: I agree, you are definitely a boxing fan.
Me: I just call it like I see it, I cant wait to see the top 6 guys, where ALL fighters actually have a chance of winning... some maybe more than others, but you are talking about 6 talented fighters, its going to be great.
Dan: Very true, it is a good idea... it also lets some of the guys who cant get fights, able to prove themselves...

    Joe Calzaghe:

Me: So you saw the Roy-Joe fight?
Dan: That was just a bad matchup for Roy at this stage.
Me: Yeah, too many punches... too much for Roy at 40...
Dan: Yes, plus you know... Roy likes to dictate the pace, and Joe isnt going to let him do that. Joe is a great fighter... the best of this generation in my opinion.
Me: Really? What do you mean by this generation?
    Dan: The last 10 years
Me: Oh ok.. well hes definitely a very good fighter.
Dan: Yeah 22 something title defenses... retiring undefeated like that...
Me: I wish he had some better names more early on his career though
Dan: Well he did fight a lot of Euros, but a lot of those fighters were good as well such as.... (cant remember)
    Me: Chris Eubank
Dan: yeah Chris Eubank... and boy he put a number on Lacy...
Me: Definitely. How do you think his resume stacks up to Roys?
Dan: I think they are definitely comparable... for different reasons, but definitley comparable.... joe is a great fighter.
Me: Yeah, I just wish they fought 10 years ago when Roy would have an answer to all that work...
Dan: Well I dont know if Joe could beat Roy in his prime... Roy in his prime was unbelievable... but I do know Joe would definitley make a fight of it.. Roy would probably beat him, but it would not be easy, Joe would give him a hell of a fight.
Me: I would agree with that..
Me: So what do you think of Pac Cotto?

    Pac-Cotto

Dan: I think Pac is going to beat him. He is another fighter on a different level now... ever since he start using that right hook, things have changed with Pac... he always used to have the jab straight left and jab, now hes aded that rihgt hand and it has grown him a fighter... freddie is doing awesome with him... Freddies also making some serious money..
Me: haha, I bet Freddie is definitely banking it... Freddie is doing great, not if you ask Floyd Sr though..
Dan: Sr doesnt know what hes talking about..
Me: If Sr wants to think in his own head hes the greatest trainer of all time, then that's fine.. most people know the deal though.. Freddie is walking the walk..
Dan: Yes he is, your not 4 time trainer of the year for nothing.. hes a great guy. But yeah, I think Pac takes it to Cotto.
Me: I agree, my only question is... can Pac take a WW punch from Cotto? Hes been wobbled at 130 by Marquez... that was last year... so far he hasnt been really hit at this kind of weight, and by Cotto? and Cotto WILL hit him... so I just have to see how Pac takes that...
Dan: Well... you do have a point.. youll have to see how he takes that punch, but I think he can... I think he is just the better fighter..
Me: Yeah, well the Clottey fight was sure close.
Dan: He almost lost that fight.

    Miguel Cotto:

Me: You know what I like about Miguel Cotto though? You know when most guys are coming up, they want all the big names right... but then when they are the big names, they stay away from the high risk low reward fights.. or they just milk their belt for paydays... whereas Cotto, you know he chose to fight Margarito, he chose to fight Clottey... I mean Clottey is no easy customer, and he doesnt bring a lot of money to the table.. but Cotto is willing to fight him anyway... and that is something i admire in Cotto.
Dan: Well you aparently follow the sport pretty close, and that is something that I agree with... he does fight the fights that you want to see... he has fought Mosley, Margarito, Clottey, Quintana.. all the bug guys in his division...
    Me: Yeah how about Pac-Floyd?

    Floyd-Pac

Dan: I think Pac beats him to be honest.
Me: I dont know, I mean its possible... you think so huh?
Dan: Definitely... at welterweight, we dont know what Floyd can do.
Me: Its true, hes shown his skills of course.. but I dont think any of the fighters he fought at WW, stack up to PAC.
    Dan: No they dont
Me: What I do like is that southpaw left hook versus floyds shoulder roll... ZAB was doing well against Floyd for 4-5 rounds... but Zabs a 4 round fighter
Dan: hahaha... all that clubbin man, Zab likes the clubs too... but yeah the left hook is good, and also, floyd isnt going to be able to easily shoulder roll Pacs punches like he does someone like Hatton..
Me: Yeah, I love that fight... I see both fighters winning, and thats what I love.

    Klitschko-Arreola

Me: One thing I would like to see though is a good American Heavyweight.. it has been awhile
Dan: Yeah, well unfortunately I think the Klitschkos will have that division locked down for awhile
Me: Probably, nobody is beating them right now in my opinion.
Dan: How do you see Arreola playing out
    Me: Bad for Arreola
Dan: He is going to get annhilated.. that guy has zero defense.
Me: His jab is going to land at will, and when that right hand comes he is going to feel it. The only thing is, and this is more with Wlad than Vitali... but I notice when someone DOES come with some pressure and some punches they dont like it too much.
Dan: Yeah they dont seem too, but right now I dont see anyone giving them that problem.
Me: What do you think of David Haye?

    David Haye:

Dan: Honestly I havent seen him fight. Who has he fought?
Me: He beat Enzo at CW and moved up and beat Monte Barret... and then tried getting a fight with Wlad but got hurt and pulled out.
Dan: Yeah I heard about that... well although I havent seen him, just based on that Id have to say he needs some more work in heavyweight before he proves he can beat one of the Klitschkos.
Me: Yeah, he does... although I was looking forwward to it.

    Oscar De La Hoya:

Me: So do you know Oscar pretty well?
Dan: Oh yeah me and Oscar go way back, actually saw him a few weekends ago, I am training this new up and comer guy and after the fight Oscar yelled for me down the hall and ran up to me and told me hes keeping an eye on my guy... Oscars a great guy, real personable.. I hear all the rumors about him, but hes always been a stand up guy to me. You know Oscar is real good for the sport, he brings attention, and money, and fame to the sport...
Me: Yeah, He has definitely fought everyone of the last 20 years.
Dan: He has, I mean you name him he fought em.

      Bernard Hopkins:

Me: You know Id like to see a Bernard Roy rematch still
Dan: Yeah, that would be a real good fight, even still which is pretty crazy...
Me: Yeah I would have to goto that fight.
Dan: A lot of people would, Bernard is a great guy.. very articulate guy... he is very dedicated to his craft, always kept his weight low, and always stayed in the gym.
Me: Yeah I think its one of the main reasons he has been so successful this late in the game is because he stays in the gym... you know when you get older Im sure those training sessions get harder and harder on your body... especially if you are inactive between them... but I know Bernard stays in shape year round... runs every other day... so its allot easier to go from running 6 miles every other day to running 8 or 9 to get in fight shape.
Dan: Well thats exactly right.. you dont have to push your body as hard if you are already basically there.
Me: He is a great fighter, regardless, and how about Hopkins Pavlik? Wow I didnt see that coming.

      Hopkins Pavlik

Dan: Yeah that was a bad style match-up for Kelly. You know, I am not one to bring up excuses.. but I am close friends with one of the guys in kellys camp, and Kelly actually had a 102 degree temperature the morning of the fight, his camp wanted him to postpone, but Kelly wanted to fight.
Me: Wow I heard he may of had the flu, but the day of?
Dan: Yeah like I said, Im not one who believes in excuses, its not really an excuse I mean, thats just what happened.
Me: Yeah, its not an excuse just a reality.
Dan: Im not even saying it had to do with him losing... but it was there..
Me: Well Bernard also had somehting to say about that as well... Bernard stepped up his game for that fight.
Dan: He really did, and at that age... I mean he wasnt clinching or anything..
      Me: Or head butting haha
      Dan: Yeah hahahaha
Me: Bernars got the old Right hand, head butt... clinch... repeat.
Dan: hahaha he does... he did that to Wink... Wink was pissed... that was a bad gash..
Me: I remember that, that was bad.... but know in the Kelly fight Bernard looked unbelievable.. I was rooting for him... it was thrilling to see someone that age put on that kind of performance.
      Dan: It was, it was.

      Amir Khan:

Me: What do you think of Amir Khan.
Dan: Uhhh... hes got some skills... still ha s alot to prove we will see..
Me: Yeah, I dont think the Barrera win proved much at all.
Dan: Ill tell you one thing... he wouldnt beat the Barerra that beat Hamed.
      Me: NO... probably not.

      Gamboa:

Me: Another fighter i like is Gamboa... he is exciting to watch, I usually like fast fighters.
Dan: He is good, very athletic... but he will get caught when he steps up... his defense isnt all there...
Me: Thats definitely one problem with him...

      ***Plane Lands***

Me: Well Dan it was nice to meet you **Shakes Hand**
      Dan: You too definitely
Me: It was seriously a pleasure that was a great conversation, and it definitely just capped off my weekend perfectly
Dan: Me too.. that was a good convo... you definitley love the sport, keep it up... goodluck with your websites...
Me: Thanks man, goodluck with your up and comers, I will keep my eye on who you are training more closely.
      Dan: Yeah do that...
      Me: Alright, take it easy
Dan: You too nice talking with ya...

      --------------------------------------------------------------

It was an awesome feeling to have Dan Birmingham tell me I know what Im talking about haha... that capped off my weekend perfectly.

This is all I remember from our convo... it took me like 2 hours to type this I had to keep stopping to remember what exactly we said... if more comes to mind i will post it in here...
