Do HBO, Showtime, and ESPN need to focus more on the actual sport?

I've been thinking about how Boxing could get more popular and as I was watching Around the horn, PTI, and etc. it hit me on what boxing really needs more then anything else:

-A type of show like Steve Bunce's boxing hour.

It doesn't sound like much, but it's a show that actually talks about boxing. I've learned more and more about the NFL this past year and last because I watch ESPN a lot more frequently. If there's a show about boxing then that might create more interest this just friday night fights.

Another thing...is it just me or does each fight on Showtime/HBO feel just like an event. It's like each fight is just a fight. It feels like it has no effect on the rest of the division or whatever. Like with Football they talk about how each game has effect on the division and then how it will affect the future.

It's like the fight is for the championship of the world and then that's it. There's no "Well this is who he could fight next" And especially if the guy is by another promoter. I don't care if he has a contract of another fighter. If the media presses and presses for that fight, then it'll make the ****in fight happen.

Look at JMM and Campbell. This is a fight that needs to be made, but Campbell always bitches about GBP being unfair and blah blah blah. I know that GBP might be doing their bull**** and it's ok to let out some frustration, but does Campbell really think that GBP wants to promote a fight with him now? **** no they don't.

Here's the thing, if the media wants that fight, then they can press for it. Then hopefully GBP and King will let bygones be bygones and at least try to make the fight happen.

HBO, Showtime, and ESPN especially ESPN need to have a boxing show featuring analysts and promoting fights and whatever. **** even if it's on 1 day a week or 30 minutes a day, they should atleast try to promote more fights. Even if it's a regular HBO fight and not a PPV.

That's the bad thing about HBO and Showtime, if a fight happens to flop it's ok because HBO still makes their money based on # of subscriptions. However, while that's a good thing, it's also a bad thing because the promoter/HBO never takes time to promote the fight for people to tune in. The only exceptions I can think of are Hopkins-Calzaghe and Vasquez Marquez 3. But where is the hype for Mosley-Mayorga?

Long post, but still felt it needed to be said.

Japanese fighter is Hozumi Hasegawa. That guy is great, but no one seems to give a **** about Bantamweight minus myself and 2501.

I think Boxing's promotional ventures and marketing are stuck in what worked 30 years ago.

A boxing show on ESPN other than FNF or WNF sounds like a good idea. It beats the poker marathons they have every other night.

I think the for the most part the producers on the ESPN shows couldnt give two ****s about boxing. Their three main shows, PTI, Around The Horn, and Sportscenter hardly if ever talk boxing, and when they do it's almost embarrassing to watch because they sound so clueless.

You can tell guys like Jim Rome and Stephen A. Smith try their hardest to include some boxing when they can. Other than that, I just dont see it. Maybe it's because of how unorganized it is. The politics involved might confuse a lot of people. Still you have a guy like Kelly Pavlik who has the look, the style, and the support. He should be on ESPN all the time. When a question was asked about him on PTI they said, "Who's Kelly Pavlik? Boxing is dead" But of course when the topic of De La Hoya/Pacquiao comes up, "I cant wait for this fight, should be a great one."

Take for example, their was a fight in the WNBA that got probably triple the coverage that Cotto/Margarto did. The media tells us what to watch. It's why you had people who never watched a minute of basketball talking about the Celtics/Lakers match up. It's also why I won numerous bets on that series with people who had no idea what the concept of team defense is, but that's neither here nor there...

I think HBO is doing their part with the countdown shows and 24/7 at least. Theres only one Worldwide Leader of Sports though.

Just put a picture of Tye Fields face next to the tv. That will remind them when its time to watch boxing.... ALL OF THE ****IN TIME.

Yep, the sport, and sportsmanship. Rather than a single fight like we have on HBO, it should be a 4 hour event, with a few 4 round fights showcasing some decent prospects, then a 10 rounder between a pair of highly competetive contenders, then the main event, a 12 round championship fight.

Used to be alot of shows like that, years and years ago. And as I recall, boxing was a pretty ****ing popular sport. I'm not saying it's the only cause, but honestly, tuning in to watch a fight between a has-been and a never was, without getting to see ANY undercard fights (presumably because they don't want them to eclipse the big show), and being forced to sit through a full hour of listening to a couple of ****heads stroke each other's egos....it's gotta have a helluva lot to with boxing's decline in popularity.

many people don't keep up with sports because they like it, but because they can win money, or support some team from their area.

but a boxing show on regular tv wouldn't be bad.
