    Gypsy Blood

incase anyone is interested in the Gypsy culture where two of Britains two best prospects come from (Tyson Fury and Billy Joe Saunders) this is a doc on travellers and why they fight/ how they live.

Also its worth watching if youre interested in the history of boxing as its in these communities that we can see how modern (ie not ancient greek or egyptian) boxing would have looked in the 1800's.

Lots of violent scenes, and also scenes of cock fighting which i dont condone but it is a part of their culture i suppose.

Not sure if it will work outside the UK though...

I watched that program earlier this year, but didn't finish watching it.

I didn't know it was a likely origin for modern boxing though. That's pretty interesting, because their traditional fighting style does bare a strong resemblance to our modern boxing.

By the way, do you know which "Gypsy" community Tyson Fury and Billy Joe Saunders belong to? I see some sources call them Romani (i.e. the ones with distant Indian/Pakistani roots), while some others call them Travellers (i.e. the ones with Irish roots)... or maybe they're a mix of both, since it's become more common for both groups to mingle.

I meant to say 'these kind of communities', i reckon watching these guys is the closest we'll get to seeing how boxing originated.

I think Fury is from Irish roots and Billy Joe is romany gypsy, But i dont know if thats right, or even if those are valid categories nowadays?

I do know that Gypsy actually comes 'Egyptian', and thats where they were originally from, also Romany comes means 'to roam' so romany gypsies were roaming egyptians (random aside but these kind of things interest me).
Edit: just looked this up and whereever i heard it was wrong lol. You are right they are from the indian subcontinent. and Romani is just their word for man. I should always check my 'facts'

Gypsies get a terrible rep all around europe, a lot of it is deserved, but they do seem to be quite a natural people living off the land which is nice to see in the modern world.

gypsies do get a bad rep, but like everyone you should give them a chance. i finished my boxing one night and was about to walk home a new guy brought his kids to the gym that night and as i was leaving he asked me if i wanted a lift. i thought to myself sure why not anyways we got talking on the way home and he told me he was a gypsy and he wanted his kids to learn not to cause trouble but to defend themselves. very interesting stuff he was a nice guy and gave me a free ride home so they cant all be dodgy

Sorry i came out completely wrong when i said that, should have edited it...

I was trying to say that this is what boxing most resembled when it started in 1800's. Bareknuckle, no ring etc...

I think boxing originally was a patronage sport? So a rich landowner would pay the toughest guy in his area to go fight another rich guys toughest?

                edit: have edited...

Yeah that was what i got from the doc, seem a very down to earth, natural people.

They just have different way of dealing with an argument or dispute. Which to us maybe makes them seem barbaric when they are anything but.

Stand by the fact that they can switch on you in an instant, very proud people and anything considered disrespectful is enough to get you in some major ****.
