    Whats happening to Setanta?

I keep reading threads hinting about Setanta closing???

Ive searched online but cant find anything on this?

I recently saw an advert from Setanta saying how next season they are showing x amount of premiership games, but if there closing why are they promoting this?

    Someone fill me in please

don't think it is going under just not spending on boxing, not through choice i suspect. Football seems to be the main focus.

They aren't 'closing' but it has been rumoured for some time they are in financial trouble. Rumours are just that of course, but it does seem to be fact that they defaulted on a £3m payment to the SPL. The rumours accelerated when, in as a result of mind numbing incompetence by the Premier League, they lost half of their two match packages to Sky (who already had four, I think), which must hit subscriber numbers. On a smaller scale, the Haye cancellation won't hep any, either.

Remember, though, that just because the company might be in trouble doesn't mean it will 'close'. It could quite easily be bought out, merged with something else, or whatever, particularly if it seems likely the business could still make good profits if not lumbered with existing debt.

Wouldn't surprise me, ESPN were sniffing around Setanta a couple of years ago. They could pick it up as a going concern for a bargain basement price if it went under. Remind me to unsubscribe first if there's any warning, new and 'returning' subscribers always get a better deal than loyal ones.

ESPN's big interest was getting their hands on the Premier League rights, though, and in their infinite wisdom the EPl suits have just handed half of Setanta's already minority share of those to Sky. Looking even more of a spectacular own goal now than it did before.
